If Hegseth is fired, there's no guarantee that his replacement would be any better.
Among names that had previously been floated, Ernst or Pompeo are the obvious choices that could competently run the DoD.
My unconventional suggestion remains former Senator Jim Talent.

Ukrainian President Zelensky: Moscow did not have enough time to respond both to the offer of a complete ceasefire for the next 30 days after Easter, and to the offer to continue at least the "ceasefire in the sky" in regards to civilian infrastructure and to refrain from missile and drone strikes. Ukraine isn't going to agree to either of these conditions. Trump continues to waste his time trying to force a peace deal when Russia has no incentive to negotiate in good faith and Ukraine isn't going to roll over and accept such nonsense.
