@nerfherder92177: The day of the carriers as we know rhem will probably come to an end at some point but we are not there yet. Carriers offer flexibility that land based airpower or other systems can't deliver. Especially in a possible next Pacific war, both for the US and for China.
They aren't operating on their own but as part of a much larger system.
In case of the Royal Navy's carriers, they are very useful in European scenarios featuring Russia.
As for your analogy, battleships remained useful throughout WW2 but the carrier replaced them as the primary capital ship.

Conceptually, to me, little has changed.
Reaction times are a lot shorter now, but with the exception of ballistic missiles, that has been the case since the 60s vs the Soviet Navy and Naval Aviation.
