It is likely we now will have to wait for official comments to know more.

In particular, from the Danes on the Yi Peng 3, and from the Swedes, on the survey of the site of the cable cuts, but also from the other countries involved.

Was this sabotage?

It is too early to conclude.

However, enough information is publicly available, along with the very similar NewNew Polar Bear incident last year, making investigating this as possible sabotage, as Sweden does, the right course of action.

A general observation:

Using merchant ships dragging an anchor is a low cost, low tech, effective, and deniable method of sabotaging seafloor infrastructure.

There are no easy solutions available to counter such a threat.

RT @RALee85: I wouldn't be surprised if this decision has a greater effect on the battlefield than the policy change on ATACMS strikes into Russian territory. https://twitter.com/RALee85/status/1859040293867450674#m

@SisyphusUnleas: One can easily find the ship afterwards but, if intentionally done, finding the actor who orchestrated it isn't easy.

Loss of and dragging of anchors isn't uncommon, so it's a very useful cover story.

It is also deniable in the way that, thinking prevention, any ship, regardless of flag, could be a potential culprit.

@Fahlan70: As @Rebel44CZ says in his reply, this is covered by the ship's insurer.

Loss of and dragging anchors is common. If you search for it, there's a lot of loss prevention material from marine insurance companies, also from classification societies such as DNV, to be found online.
