I wouldn't link recent large scale Russian strikes with the Ukrainian Kursk operation.

See this as a clear continuation of the critical infrastructure campaign, which going into winter, is one of the more significant aspects of the war.

Yesterday wasn't the first time the Russians go after one of the Dnipro dams/HPPs either.

About the only way the Russians can escalate their campaign would be to try and knock the NPPs off the grid, which isn't a risk free undertaking.

RT @DefenceU: ⚡️ @ZelenskyyUa: There was the first successful test of the first Ukrainian ballistic missile.

Perhaps an unpopular take:

As much as you might hate the phrase "escalation management", it will be a feature of every scenario featuring Russian (and China too), short of a full strategic nuclear exchange.
The Lookout (Twitter)

I have long criticized the Western approach to this but that doesn't mean "escalation management" can be disregarded.

It means finding another approach, relying on the Wests strengths, accepting a bit more risks in the process.

Deterrence work both ways

@APHClarkson: I think context matters. As long as we are in the special military operation context, with Ukraine, I think the risk of nuclear escalation will relatively remain low.

I'm sceptical though, of trying to apply this to other scenarios and especially on a possible NATO - Russia war
The Lookout (Twitter)

@APHClarkson: Such a deployment would force the Russians to face a difficult decision on how to respond and more often than not, they don't want to make such decisions but choose to plod along.

Doesn't mean they wouldn't create noise and send us into an uncomfortable crisis though.
