Interesting chapter from Alexander Bick who led the NSC's Russia-Ukraine Tiger Team on the Biden administration's thinking during the Russian buildup:

"Over the fall, the administration was trying to balance two contradictory objectives—to ensure that Ukraine had the capabilities to defend itself, while avoiding any steps that might increase the likelihood of an invasion or affix blame on the United States. As Colin Kahl, then under secretary of defense for policy, later put it, 'we didn’t want to inadvertently speed up the Russian clock, incentivize Putin, or give him a pretext to make a decision he had not made. Us leaning too far forward could create dynamics either within the alliance or as we were trying to build world opinion against the Russians that made us look like we were the provocateurs.'"

@pierre_alonso @nytimes: It’s not only the Patriots that can shoot down ballistic missiles. SAMP-T can definitely intercepted Iskander-M and maybe Zircon. But it probably cannot intercept Kinzhals. Only Patriot PAC-3 MSE/CRI are proven to have shot down Kinzhal. But Ukraine needs both SAMP-T and Patriot.

@ukraine_map @pierre_alonso @nytimes: NATO has around 100 Patriots and 17 SAMP-T split up between France and Italy.

Ukraine has received 3 Patriot Batteries and 1 SAMP-T Battery. Ukraine will need 10-12 of those batteries to effectively defend the country, and a couple more for the frontline.

However, the Kinzhal is harder to intercept due to it flying at speeds up to 10 Mach up until the last phase where the speed drops, while Iskander-M flies slower at 6 to 7 Mach

These ATACMS are absolutely devastating but Ukraine hasn’t been given any 300km Cluster ATACMS missiles to strike Crimea

The 1st Iskander-M missile struck a generator in the dam, and the 2nd Iskander-M missile struck the substation and transmission lines
