Even if the battles for Bakhmut - Soledar eventually results in a Russian tactical victory, from a strategic perspective a few km's gained changes little.

What matters is attrition and the resources consumed, for both sides.
For Rus this is a substantial effort.

The AFU repulsed attacks around Spirne, Rozdolivka, Vesele and Bakhmut. The situation in Soledar is still unclear, but it think it's likely RU forces control about 75% of it. https://t.co/xb3DEWDbHA

@TheDiscoSteve If they were smart enough not to point guns at their heads, they wouldn't be sitting in trenches in a foreign country right now.

For Ukraine though, increased Rus pressure can force commitment of reserves intended for other purposes. We might be seeing a Rus attempt to prevent a Ukr offensive by forcing a battle on upon them, on Russian terms.

@KofmanMichael:
I don’t think the outcome at Bakhmut is that significant compared to what it costs Russia to achieve it. Those costs may impinge on RU military strategy. But this costly battle could also impact Ukraine’s offensive plans, and the fight for Bakhmut looks increasingly uncertain. https://t.co/Yrxy2z4Phf

@19Lv85 In Russia there is quite a popular opinion like “the king is good, the boyars are bad”. That Putin, the top leadership, is actually really good, it’s just that Russia is so big that they don’t have time to follow everything and to control all small commanders.
