I'm not sure Gerasimov is still playing the same role as he did pre-Feb 24. It seems Surovikin is reporting directly to Putin, bypassing Shoigu and Gerasimov. That's why conversations with Naryshkin and Patrushev may be ever more important now.

@J_JHelin I think Surovikin is the first true unified commander of Russian forces in Ukraine, and Putin was directly calling group commanders before this. I think he realized that he needed to give a single commander responsibility because his mistakes led to the current problems.

@krakek1 True, but his role as the senior military officer, his role in the war, and his connection to Putin are why Milley would call him. If he no longer has the same important operational role or advisory role to Putin, conversations with him are less useful for US officials.
