At some point a Russian official had to mention why they were occupying parts of Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, and Kharkiv oblasts when the ostensible territorial goal was the Donbas (which was not the initial goal). The justification will shift to suit the status of the battlefield.

Keep in mind that there is a large variance in the Western estimates of Russia casualties (Ben Wallace said 25k KIA recently), and that this figure includes the Russian military, Rosgvardia, Wagner, and DNR/LNR forces.
