Interesting interview with a Russian T-80BVM tanker who fought in Ukraine. He has positive things to say about the tank but criticized its Sosna-U thermal imager, noted its high fuel consumption, and said they never bring more than 10 shells at a time.

They don't bring more shells because of the risk of the ammunition detonating after an anti-tank strike. He said they only had 3BM42 Mango APDSFS shells in the beginning and ran low on ammunition. He suggested it is difficult to effectively employ cannon-launched ATGMs. 2/

He notes how important it is for tanks to work with infantry to locate the enemy and noted that, while the T-80BVM's optics weren't great, the issue was less critical because they were facing modernized Soviet-era tanks. 3/

He said Russia is having success in tank duels and its forces are actively seeking them. He said Russian tanks only need one strike on Ukrainian tanks because they carry too much ammunition. And he noted T-80BVM have been reliable and said its soft side armor proved effective. 4/

No, the West has clearly failed to contain Putin, who wages a unprovoked war of conquest to reclaim "lost" land.

Time for Washington to develop a diplomatic game-plan that clarifies war aims and leads toward a ceasefire and negotiated end to the war in Ukraine. A prolonged and bloody conflict serves no one's interests.

Unless Putins ambitions are stopped in Ukraine, on the battlefield, "a ceasefire and follow-on process aimed at concluding a territorial settlement" will increase the risk of the bigger conflagration the author wants to avoid.

Sometimes fighting is the only right thing to do, for as long as it takes to win, whatever the cost may be.
Seen from a small country bordering Russia: Giving up our principles for a brief respite, for Putin will re-arm and try again, will lead us into a very dark future
