Speaking at the Valdai club, Russian President Putin asked what sense does it make for Ukraine to defend the parts of Donetsk Oblast if, according to him, it is bound to lose them due to the advance of Russian troops anyway.

It's worth noting here that in the last few months, Ukraine recaptured more of its land than the Russians managed to occupy. Although the Russian army maintains the offensive stance in the Donbas region, its tempo of advance has slowed down sharply in comparsion to 2024–2025, and the Russians still haven't approached the main Ukrainian defensive "fortress belt" consisting of the cities of Druzhkivka, Kramatorsk and Slovyansk.
