Given that Spruance's load out was primarily normal TLAMs (at least based on the videos), they could have just used those only. Any Foreign Material Exploitation concerns were evidently overridden by other considerations.

It should be emphasized that this particular engagement attempt is more a failure of TTPs (Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures) than any limitation with the interceptors. The Ukrainian experience has resulted in many lessons learned, which have improved their interception rates against Russian missiles.
Those lessons learned are passed onto the US Army, which is in the process of implementing them. The fact that Iran's missile attacks haven't been more successful speaks to both the capability of America's missile defense systems and the continued learning underway.
Failed engagements like this are an exception, not a rule. As TTPs are further refined, based on the experiences of Ukrainian, American and other allied aid defense crews, interception rates will further improve.
