Dmitry Peskov has said that the next round of trilateral talks between Russia, the US and Ukraine will take place in Geneva. The Russian delegation will be headed by Vladimir Medinsky.
It is surprising that the Kremlin has agreed to Geneva, given that Switzerland has so far been described by Russian officials as “hostile”. Moscow will likely present this as a concession.
Medinsky’s return means that political demands are clearly back on the table. They were always there, but now they are taking on a practical dimension. Territorial disagreements are minor compared with these political demands — something US officials tend to underestimate.
