I notice this every year since 2022, and each time I tell myself that maybe it’s just my own bubble. But with every passing year, reality around me proves the opposite -- and ever more clearly.

Now, on December 24, the very streets seem to breathe with the anticipation of that day.

The country is at war. Streets are dark from power outages caused by Russian missile strikes on our vital infrastructure. Many people around wear camouflage, many walk with prosthetics.

And yet there are long lines in supermarkets -- people stocking up to cook a festive dinner at home, often by candlelight.

I see businesses putting signs in their windows: Closed on the 25th, Merry Christmas to everyone. On television, amid frontline reports, there are ancient folk...
