Several Russian channels are saying that the current commander of the Central Military District Colonel General Andrey Mordvichev will replace Salyukov as commander of the Russian Ground Forces. Much of Russia's advances since 2023 have been on the Avdiivka-Pokrovsk front, which he commanded.

In addition to his role as Central Military District commander, he led the Southern Military District's 8th Combined Arms Army at the beginning of the war, including during the battle of Mariupol. As CINC Ground Forces, he would also become a more likely potential successor to Gerasimov as either Chief of the General Staff or as commander of the war in Ukraine. He also brings a better understanding of the war and new technological developments than his predecessor.
