RT @JamieMctrusty: 15th September, 1942, 2:45pm. While part of the escort of a reinforcement convoy bound for Guadalcanal, the carrier USS Wasp was struck by 3 torpedoes from the Japanese submarine I-19. One more from the salvo of six hit the destroyer USS O’Brien even as she successfully evaded another, while the battleship USS North Carolina was also torpedoed. It was one of the most effective Japanese submarine attacks of the war.
A severe fire broke out on Wasp almost immediately as ruptured aviation fuel tanks ignited, causing a series of explosions which ripped through the carrier as aircraft and munitions blew up. The crew struggled to control the flames, but the firefighting mains had failed and it quickly became evident that Wasp could not be saved. ‘Abandon ship’ was ordered at 3:20pm, with her commander, Captain Forrest Sherman, one of the last men to leave at 4pm.
Wasp’s hull was by now glowi...

@CovertShores: Have you seen the original source of this one? I haven't found it and feel something might be off.
The ship on the left here looks like a Smolnyy-class.

@KaptainLOMA: I don't think they will relocate permanently, mainly because there are no other good options beside Novorossiysk.
Think @CovertShores original theory, dispersal or training dispersal in anticipation of missile attack, remains a plausible explanation.

@CovertShores @KaptainLOMA: This also fits into the broader picture here, that the Russians for once are trying to be proactive in regards to possible long range strikes.
It's a theory, but for now the best one.

In case anyone wondered:

6. Obukhovka/Veseloe incursion mid-SEPT.
Since then reports suggest Veseloe is contested while today some Ru reports say UAF took Obukhovka (attached to Veseloe)
Here UAF wallop a🇷🇺occupied school in Veseloe.
