Metallus (TimkenSteel) has broken ground on a +$100 million expansion of their Faircrest Plant in Canton, Ohio, which will house a new bloom reheat furnace. Metallus makes High Fragmentation (HF-1) Steel, which is used in 155mm shells.
The expansion is being funded largely by an up to $99 million Other Transaction Agreement contract from the US Army, with the money coming from the Ukraine Supplemental Appropriations Acts. This is the first time the Department of Defense has awarded Metallus a prime contract. $65 million has been committed so far, with a first payment of $10m already made to Metallus. JobsOhio has also made a $3.5 million investment in the project.
Metallus is normally (and continues to be) subcontracted by General Dynamics Ordnance & Tactical Systems to provide them with the steel billets which are then forged into M795, M1128, and XM113 artillery shell bodies. The Army has aw...
