They would’ve withdrawn a week ago when Syrksyi was appointed but they decided to stay in a send more troops in to free more land, which seriously backfired. Zaluzhnyi said in a press conference that Ukraine may withdraw Avdiivka around this time a couple months ago because it was hard to defend. He values the soldiers lives more as a priority.

This is a common occurrence with Syrksyi, it had happened when he led the Battle of Debaltseve in 2015 where a 1,000 Ukrainian troops were wounded, captured, and killed due to them being almost encircled, then it happened in Bakhmut under Syrksyi, and now it’s happening in Avdiivka. There is a reason he is called “The Butcher”.
