Recently on December 11-13 Russia targeted a critical infrastructure target in the city of Kyiv with an S-400 missile

@Kingstyler88 @MinuteofZombie: It would need to be changed from an external radar source to an internal terminal homing. This is something Russian engineers would have needed to redesigned and it is possible, as they have used S-400 multiple times on Kyiv. And had at least one very accurate infrastructure hit.

@Kingstyler88 @StijnOerde @MinuteofZombie: Similar to a typical ground attack missile, it could also be used with GLONASS. It’s a modified missile, S-300 is also used for ground attack by Russia. And Ukraine has attempted to do this with S-200 missiles, but they miss by a lot likely due to how old the actual missiles are.

@Kingstyler88 @MinuteofZombie: A complete redesign is not necessary, just like Russian FAB-500 with light modifications kits, and Tornado MLRS are able to find their targets. The missiles don’t necessarily need to be entirely redesigned and can use GLONASS with an Internal Navigation System to find the target.

@Kingstyler88 @StijnOerde @MinuteofZombie: The difference is Kh-22s are from the 1960s and are no longer produced, while S-400s are being mass-produced. It’s like trying to an old 1960s car when there are no places to fix it vs a new 2020 BMW (S-400 missiles) when there are plenty of BMW dealerships and factories around.

Such a deployment began around August '22 and following the additional dispersal of bombers from Engels after the Ukrainian attack in Dec '22, a major percentage of bombers in a strike flying from Kola became the new normal.
