RT @CENTCOM: Iranian-backed Houthi small boats attack merchant vessel and U.S. Navy helicopters in Southern Red Sea
On Dec. 31 at 6:30am (Sanaa time) the container ship MAERSK HANGZHOU issued a second distress call in less than 24 hours reporting being under attack by four Iranian-backed Houthi small boats. The small boats, originating from Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen, fired crew served and small arms weapons at the MAERSK HANGZHOU, getting to within 20 meters of the vessel, and attempted to board the vessel. A contract embarked security team on the MAERSK HANZGHOU returned fire. U.S. helicopters from the USS EISENHOWER (CVN 69) and GRAVELY (DDG 107) responded to the distress call and in the process of issuing verbal calls to the small boats, the small boats fired upon the U.S. helicopters with crew served weapons and small arms. RT @JamieMctrusty: 31st December 1942: Battle of the Barents Sea. A German attack on convoy JW 51B headed by the heavy cruisers Lützow and Hipper was beaten off by a determined British defence. Afterwards, Hitler threatened to disband the entire Kreigsmarine surface fleet, but was ultimately dissuaded by Dönitz.

1) Damage to the destroyer HMS Onslow, lead ship of JW 51B’s escort force. 17 of her crew were killed and 23 wounded by shell hits from Hipper. Captain Robert Sherbrooke’s aggressive tactics were key to keeping the German cruisers at bay.

2) Sherbrooke himself received serious facial injuries during the battle, being temporarily blinded. He insisted on continuing to direct the battle for as long as possible, however, and received reports even as he was being treated. He was later awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions.
