They don't have to hit anything to generate not insignificant effects.

Satellite imagery of the wreckage of a Russian Sukhoi Su-34 fighter-bomber (RF-95808) near Balakliya in Kharkiv Oblast.
The plane was shot down in April 22; the remains were discovered after the liberation of the town by Ukrainians in Sep 22.
