This incident did not result in the RAF scrubbing their RC-135 mission over the Black Sea, instead they added fighter escorts.

While a possible shoot down of a Western ISR aircraft would be serious, historical data indicates that the risk of wider escalation would remain low.

@staffanst I'm by no expert on the 1814 - 1905 period, but it was a personal Union, with a common monarch and foreign policy.

Constitutions, Parliaments, Armed Forces etc remained separate in Norway and Sweden. The lack of own foreign policy is what led to Norway seeking full independence

@uelandir More than 200 US aircrew were killed in Cold War Soviet shoot-downs, many in international airspace and these didn't lead to war.

Sweden also lost planes.

North Korea captured the USS Pueblo in 1968, shot down a US EC-121 with 31 killed in 1969, without war breaking out.

@penderbook Such incidents, with heavy loss of life, has been caused both by the Soviet Union and North Korea during the Cold War, without leading to general war.

Shooting down a NATO ISR flight would likely lead to a crisis, yes, but there is no automatic escalation here.
