Salyukov is the commander of the Russian Ground Forces and Kim is its deputy commander. This appears to be a quite significant change. Not clear if this means Surovikin will be in charge of Russian Air Force operations or if the force groupings will remain the same.

I don't think this is because Surovikin is viewed as a failure. Certainly possible that this was driven by political reasons. As the unified commander in Ukraine, Surovikin was becoming very powerful and was likely bypassing Shoigu/Gerasimov when talking to Putin.

This reasserts the MoD's position overseeing the war. Prigozhin has praised Surovikin while criticizing Lapin and the senior leadership of the MoD. This may also partially be a response to Wagner's increasingly influential and public role in the war.

Prigozhin is trying to make himself the public face of Russia's force, and he consistently puts out videos allegedly showing him near the front and seeing the hardships his fighters face. He has repeatedly criticized generals and MoD leaders who are doing the opposite.

So Gerasimov can now put out videos showing him doing the same and taking charge when the front line has stabilized (and not take the blame for leaving the right bank of Kherson). Notable that he is bringing two Ground Forces officials who didn't have a command role in the war.
