As @RALee85 points to here, I think we in the West needs to be a little humble when it comes to discussing Ukrainian needs, their experiences and lessons learned.

We haven't seen anything similar since 1945, with the exception of Korea just a few years later.

@RALee85:
Adaptations occur rapidly in wars because the price of committing mistakes is incredibly high. Ukrainians have more conventional warfare experience than any of us, and they keep using tanks and asking for more. That's a pretty good indication that tanks are still relevant.

@The_Lookout_N It is an open discussion when we talk about which lessons from this war would apply to other militaries and potential conflicts, but the Ukrainians certainly have a better understanding of what was important in this war.

@RALee85 I was thinking of lessons learned for Ukraine, in this war, when I wrote that.

How we choose to apply those lessons elsewhere is another thing, but there are bad takes out there. As an example, they do tend to surface in the debate on new tanks for the Norwegian Army.
Rob Lee (Twitter)

@The_Lookout_N I wasn't disagreeing with you. I think the 1st step is to learn what actually happened, and the lessons Ukrainians have drawn. Then apply it to other militaries/scenarios. Tanks may be less relevant in other contexts, but saying they haven't been important in this war is wrong.
Rob Lee (Twitter)

@einsteinradler I'm just concerned that people are doing the opposite and drawing the wrong conclusions about which weapons have been useful in Ukraine before even trying to apply them to different contexts.
The Lookout (Twitter)

@RALee85 I was also thinking about something that popped up a while back, if I remember correctly, a US proposal to train the Ukrainians for US style maneuver warfare. First impression: I'm a bit sceptical.
Rob Lee (Twitter)

@KampfmitKette @einsteinradler I think there will likely be political capital for serious reforms in Russia once the war is done, which will be easier given the high turnover of senior officers, but much of the failures stem from the senior political level. Unclear how much rotation there will be with them.

@The_Lookout_N One important take away, imo, is how you can develop/structure/train a military so it can still conduct complex offensive operations after substantial attrition. It is much more difficult to execute multi-brigade offensive operations with mobilized soldiers and officers.
