Good thread by @MassDara on Shoigu's speech yesterday.

The expansion of the ground forces does seem overly optimistic, but my first thoughts was to view this in light of the mobilization. Both on those already called up, and with future rounds of mobilization.
-----------
@MassDara:
1: with Sweden and Finland joining NATO, the Western Military District will revert back into the Moscow and Leningrad Military Districts – like before 2010, as well as an Army Corps HQ in Karelia. This makes sense with NATO expansion, so this change checks out /3

If Moscow prepares for a long war, and prolonged confrontation with NATO, more mass is needed. With the mobilization, expansion no longer hinges on voluntary measures.

Yes, both training and equipment would likely leave much to be desired.

Both Naval Infantry and the VDV now likely churns out infantry replacements, and due to casualties, these formations will eventually resemble the pre-war units in name only.

I'm not saying this process will be pretty, it will likely be a mess, but "don't underestimate Russia" rings in the back of my head.

A caveat: These are initial impressions, and will likely change over time, as we get a sense of how they actually intend to do this.

@walberque Remains to be seen, but think conscription likely will play a bigger role than they stated. Summed up some initial overall thoughts here. I sense a combination of "back to the future" and a Russia at war.

@rossin2 @MassDara That is an important question and I'm no economist, but here is my take: If they intend to continue the war, sticking to their original war-aims, they have no choice but to go down this route.
