5,800 sounds high to me, but, even if we are talking about half that figure, these are far greater losses than the Russian military has sustained in previous conflicts under Putin's leadership. Russia lost more than 3,000 troops during the 2nd Chechen War but over several years.

Not to mention, the farther the Russian military pushes into Ukraine, the more exposed its supply lines will become and the easier it will be for insurgents to target isolated Russian units. It seems many of Russia's casualties have come from supply convoys that were ambushed.

@masao22311 This one + those sent to Ukraine are older T-90A, but I don't know if they are any better than T-72B3M or T-80BVM. The latest T-90M is perhaps better.
