maple faeya-valentine brinette, or commonly known as maple brinette is a five-foot-seven songwriter, singer, music enthusiast, curator and antique enthusiast who oftentimes, for as long as she can remember, spend almost the entire week noticing things that people have already forgotten.
she writes mostly in fragments: half-done poetry, observations written on a worn notebook, passages inspired by people she just met, or sometimes description of an antique that she found interesting. her writing tends to circulate around longing, melancholy, and the intimacy between two different things that are often left behind.
perhaps, music may be the language she is understands the most. she collects songs just like how she collects old things. she finds her inspiration to write from any obscure music or even forgotten tracks and turn it into pieces of melodies.
her apartment is filled with all of her peculiar findings: tarnished silverware, porcelain figures with fractures, (possibly) haunted statue, old postcards and letters, rusty jewelry, and photographs whose subjects have already long gone with history.
for her, none of these things were truly broken.

this afternoon i sit on my favorite wooden chair with a glass of latte beside me. for the past few weeks, a wall has been built between my train of thoughts without my consent. making me cease every creative process that i did. until today, i stumbled upon ethel cain’s video. in her video she explains her thought process when making music or experiencing music and i would like to summarize it all up.

the title of the video may deceive you as something like a cult or southern gothic related but, it is not. there are three main concepts here; the ring, the great dark, and the proximity of God. it is interesting how she can put it into words, the experiences or feelings that are an abstract concept, or something that are not visible for humans to grasp. some people can perceive music as something inscrutable, a melody and instrument that will only slip through your ear. ethel created a structured concept of the experiencing music that actually makes me wonder: can someone truly explain something that is intangible or can it only be approached by a metaphor?
in the video, ethel discussed the concepts less of a concrete object but by tacitly describing it with a particular experience. she does not extort a definitive explanation of the concept, yet she wants the audience to recognize these ideas through their own experiences. on the other hand, this video can still stand as ambiguous because the subject itself can be relative and shift between one person and another. the audience is often required to fill in the gaps themselves.
