Greetings to all fans of football and football statistics!

Today the Corner-stats.com team decided to touch upon an interesting issue of basic analysis of teams statistics for the upcoming football match, which can give everyone serious food for thought.

So, for example, let's take the Italian Serie A match between Inter and Venezia, which will take place on 01/22/2022, and try to predict the corners in this match.

Consider the summary table of corners of the current season:

Corner-stats.com team proposes to build corners prediction only on the basic statistics from this table and discard all other factors (field factor (home-away), change of a coach, games with similar opponents, or others). So, Inter delivers an average of 6.19 corners per match, and Venezia delivers 2.95 corners per match, which we may take as our forecast.

But you may rightly note that corners depend not only on how the team takes them, but also on how the opponent allows corners at its goal. In our table, this corresponds to the opponent's corners total. To take into account at the same time how a team delivers and how an opponent allows corners, we will use a simple formula for the arithmetic mean of these indicators:

Expected corners Team 1 (Corners_1) = ( Team 1 individual total (Team1_IT1) + Team 2 opponents' total (Team2_IT2) ) / 2;

Expected corners Team 2 (Corners_2) = ( Team 2 individual total (Team2_IT1) + Team 1 opponents' total (Team1_IT2) ) / 2;

In the case of Inter - Venezia match, we will receive the following data:

Corners_1 = ( 6.19 + 6.62 ) / 2 = 6.41

Corners_2 = ( 2.95 + 3.86 ) / 2 = 3.41

Thus, we expect that Inter will deliver 6.41 corners in the upcoming match, and Venezia 3.41 corners, which approximately corresponds to a handicap of -3 and a total of 9.5 corners (you can calculate the bookmaker's line more accurately based on the expected figures of the teams using the tool Calculate line on Corner-stats football stats service).

And now we want to ask our users, do you think this calculation is logical and correct? Or do you have any doubt about it? We invite you to leave your comment on this issue in our Telegram chat, and the Corner-stats.com team will provide its own answer in our next post.

Basic analysis of football stats (Part 2)

In the previous post, Corner-stats.com team reviewed a basic analysis of football statistics and made a prediction for corners in the match Inter Milan - Venezia. Now we will continue our reflections and reveal, in our opinion, an important logical error in this approach to the analysis of statistics. For a better understanding, we recommend that you first read the first part of our study.

So, based on the average total corners of Inter and Venezia, as well as the average totals of their opponents, we have determined that Inter should take 6.41 corners in the upcoming match, and Venezia 3.41. Accordingly, if Inter would play, for example, with Atalanta, we would get the expected corners for Inter 5.07, and for Atalanta 4.81. It seems that everything is logical: for Inter against weak Venezia, we got a difference of 3 corners, and against strong Atalanta, the difference on corners is minimal.

But let's think - if the average individual total corners for Inter is 6.19, then it is logical that on average against weak teams its total should be higher (say, somewhere around 7.5), against middle teams it will be around 6.19, and against strong it should be lower (somewhere around 4.9). Similarly, if Venezia on average allows 6.62 corners, against strong teams they should allow about 8.0 corners on average, against middle teams about 6.62 and against weak teams about 5.2 corners.

Based on the above, as well as the fact that Inter is a strong team (2nd place on corners), and Venezia is a weak team (last place on corners), then Inter in the upcoming match, of course, should take significantly more corners than its average individual total. If we take the approximate figures from the previous paragraph, then the individual total corners of Inter should definitely not be less than 7.5 (rather (7.5+8.0)/2=7.75 ), and this is significantly more than 6.41, as we did in the calculations in the first part of the study.

We make a logical conclusion that the basic analysis, how many corners a team takes on average, and how many corners an opponent allows on average, does not give us the correct results, but almost always underestimates the difference between the teams. And the greater the gap in strength between the teams, the greater will be the underestimation of the difference. We also draw your attention to the fact that the conclusion obtained is true not only for corners, but also for all other statistical indicators (goals, shots, throw-ins, etc.).

We hope that you have benefited from our research and that it will help you in your strategies. If you do not agree with us or have other comments on this matter, you can post them in our Telegram chat.

P.S. In the current article, we used approximate calculations (by eye), but how this can be calculated more accurately using formulas, the Corner-stats.com team will tell in our next post.

Basic analysis of football stats (Part 3)

The Corner-stats.com team continues to talk about basic analysis of football statistics based on teams averages. In the previous two parts of our study, we reviewed the basic analysis of football statistics and identified a logical fallacy in this approach to statistical analysis. Now we invite our users to learn how, using simple formulas, you can avoid this error and build a more logical prediction of corners (or any other statistical indicator) in a match. For a better understanding, we recommend that you first read the first and second parts.

So, the Corner-stats.com team analyzed the Italian Serie A match Inter - Venezia and came to the conclusion that the calculated expected corners in the match based on the average individual totals of a team and opponents (6.41 and 3.41) are not correct, since it is logical that Inter, as a strong team, against a weak Venezia must take significantly more corners than its average total, similarly Venezia should take less than its average total.

At the moment, the match has already taken place, the score on corners is 6:0. Therefore, let us recall what the table of corners looked like before the start of our match:

So, Inter average individual total corners is 6.19. But, as noted, we expect Inter to take more corners against a weak Venezia. How to calculate it? The Corner-stats.com team suggests the following easy way:

1. Take the average individual total of the first team (Team1_IT1).

2. Take the average individual total of the opponents of the second team (Team2_IT2) (how many corners the second team allows on average) and calculate how many times it differs from the league average. League averages can be found at the bottom of the league table at Corner-stats.com.

3. Correct Team1_IT1 for the result from p. 2.

Using this algorithm, let's calculate the expected corners for our teams:

For Inter:

1. Team1_IT1 = 6.19;

2. Corr_1 = 6.62 / 4.75 = 1.394 ;

3. Corners_1 = 6.19 * 1.394 = 8.63 .

For Venezia:

1. Team2_IT1 = 2.95;

2. Corr_2 = 3.86 / 4.75 = 0.813 ;

3. Corners_2 = 2.95 * 0.813 = 2.40 .

Thus, according to this algorithm, our forecast for corners in the Inter-Venezia match looks like 8.63 - 2.40, which approximately corresponds to the asian handicap of -6.0 from Inter and the total of 11.0 in an equal line. The Corner-stats.com team believes that this forecast is much more logical than the one that was obtained in the first part of our study.

If you have any questions or comments on this study, you can leave them in our Telegram chat. And in our next post, the Corner-stats.com team will offer our users another way to analyze football statistics. Have a good football!

A Tool of Line Creation + Tipster Rating by Corner-stats.com

You may have already noticed that we placed a button "Add your line and become the best tipster" on the match page under the betting lines on Corner-stats.com.

As you probably already understood, the Corner-stats.com team has developed a functionality thanks to which each user can create his own line for a football match, that is, in fact, try himself as a bookmaker.

You can create a line in 2 ways:

- set handicap and total, as well as, if necessary, adjust the odds (using the "+" "-" buttons);
- set the expected values of goals (or corners, cards, throw-ins, etc.) for an upcoming match.

Please note that if you set handicap and total, then the expected values of the indicators will be calculated automatically (and vice versa).

How this functionality can be useful:

- the line set for the match is actually a forecast, that is, looking at the lines of other users, in fact, you will find out their opinion on the outcome of the upcoming match;
- you can also compare your line with the bookmaker's line (for example, you can create your own line before the release of the bookmakers' lines, and then compare them).

In addition, the Corner-stats.com team has developed a tool for comparing lines (forecasts) of users (including bookmaker lines) - Tipster Rating from Corner-stats.com. Rating allows you to compare the efficiency of the lines (forecasts) using the standard deviation method from the result of the match. The smaller the deviation, the higher the user's rating. By using rating filters, you can, for example, find out who is the best at predicting fouls in Australian A-League matches.

We hope our new functionality will be useful for you. And soon we plan to hold a competition with cash prizes for the best line among our users (line makers). Follow the announcements!

Tipsters competitions on WC 2022

The Corner-stats.com team congratulates everyone on the start of the 2022 FIFA World Cup and invites you to take part in the tipster competition on our website.

To take part in the competition, you need to give predictions of the line (odds) for the matches of the World Cup. How to do this, you can read more here. Thus, participants compete with each other, as well as with bookmakers, whose line is better.

Based on the results of the World Cup, we will determine the best line predictors on goals, corners, cards, shots, fouls, offsides and throw-ins. You can follow the results of tipsters on the Tipsters Rating page. Pay attention to the columns of Wins, Draws, Losses in the rating table. They calculate how many times your line was better than the bookmaker's closing line (Wins), the same as the bookmaker's (Draws), or worse than the bookmaker's closing line (Losses).

Valuable prizes await the best forecasters!
As you all know, Corner-stats.com is a service for professional football bettors.

A professional bettor considers betting as an opportunity to consistently make money on it. This can be achieved in the only way: choose bets where bookmaker set an overestimated odds according in bettor's opinion, that is, the bookmaker's line (odds) differs from the line that the professional bettor made himself.

At the same time, a professional bettor:
- understands on the basis of what the bookmaker set his line (mostly bookmakers do this on the basis of basic statistics, and then the line is adjusted depending on the bets of the bettors);
- understands those or other specific factors that can affect a football match and which the bookmaker did not take into account;
- analyzes the results of his bets not according to whether it "came or didn't come", but whether the bet was correct or incorrect based on events in a football match;
- understands that it is possible to evaluate his work only at a distance, therefore he does not bother with local successes or failures.

On the Corner-stats.com site, users have the opportunity to add their line for a football match (both the main line and the line for corners, cards, fouls, and other statistics). And with the help of the Tipster Rating table, you can see who makes the line better - bettor or bookmaker.
#easy_to_analyze_when_the_result_is_known

Yesterday, the final round was held in group C of the 2022 World Cup. All teams had a chance to reach the playoffs, and as a result, Poland and Argentina succeeded, which played against each other.

Let's analyze what you had to foresee or know in order to win at bookmakers at yesterday's World Cup match Poland - Argentina. So, in my humble opinion, as an analyst at the Corner-stats.com football statistics service, we had to predict that:

1. Poland will play in a low block and hardly think about attacking moves. The fact that Argentina needed only a win was known to everyone. Based on this, we observed the total advantage of Argentina in the 1st half and, as a result, the score was 1-14 on shots, 0-9 on shots on target, and 1-8 on corners. Also due to the low block of Poland and the lack of pressure, there were a small number of fouls (2-6) and offsides (0-0).

2. Both Argentina and Poland were satisfied with the victory of the South Americans with a small score, therefore, even losing, Poland was not going to attack and win back. At the end of the match, the teams just rolled the ball.

3. In the case of the same number of points and the goals difference between Poland and Mexico, the team that received fewer cards in the tournament would go further. The Poles were instructed about this, and as a result there were few fouls and cards.

I hope many of you predicted this with the help of the football statistics service Corner-stats.com and made the right bets.

Level of football team development strategy. Football analysis. Part 1

Why are some football teams more successful than others? Why did this particular team win in this particular match? And a directly related question - how do bookmakers evaluate teams and set odds for upcoming football matches? Modern football is an interesting dynamic game, which is influenced by a huge number of factors.

The Corner-stats.com team of experts proposes to consider the analysis of a football match based on different levels. We have identified 4 levels of football analysis - from strategic team management to direct decisions during the game, and what came out of it, read in our subsequent publications.

So, the first level of football analysis is the level of the football team development strategy (3-10 years). The team development strategy is determined by the following factors:
- financial resources available to the team
- football philosophy of the owner(s) of the club
- quality of football club management
- transfers policy
- the development of football in the country where the team plays.

In the vast majority of cases, these factors are open and known to both bookmakers and bettors. Based on them, we can quite accurately determine for the next couple of years whether the team will be among the leaders, middle teams or outsiders, as well as approximately what kind of football the team will play. Bookmakers evaluate football teams in a similar way, and according to Corner-stats.com, the decisive factors for bookmakers are the "purse" and the squad of the team.

Bettor may well play only on the basis of the strategy of a football team, in this case, his task is to evaluate the team's strategy better than the bookmaker. That is, we determine for ourselves the development strategy of the football team for the next few years and evaluate how successful it will be. Based on this, we decide whether to bet long-term on the team or against the team.

On the website of professional football statistics Corner-stats.com you can find unique tools for analyzing statistics, including those for determining the success of a team's development strategy. Read more in the Help section.
Reding and Birmingham have the worst possession in Championship.

WC 2022 tournament stats. Comparison with WC 2018 and EPL

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar has come to an end. Despite various fears of football analysts, the World Cup turned out to be bright and brought a lot of emotions to the fans. The

Corner-stats.com team compared the tournament statistics of the World Cup 2022 with the statistics of the World Cup 2018, as well as with the statistics of the English Premier League, which is not inferior to the World Cup in teams squads:

Attack:

Goals Goals
1 half Shots On target Corners Crosses Longballs
WC 2022 2.62 1.05 22.02 7.86 8.58 33.27 129.11
WC 2018 2.59 1.02 24.67 7.70 9.19 32.31 139.62
EPL 2022/23 2.87 1.32 25.19 8.98 10.18 35.03 133.28
As you can see from the table, there are more shots, corners, crosses and goals in EPL than in the World Cups. But if we analyze the statistics by halves, we will see that this difference is formed due to the first halves (the ratio of goals in the 2nd half to goals in the 1st half in EPL is 1.17, in the World Cups - 1.49 and 1.54). Probably, this is due to the fact that in the first halves at World Cup the teams study each other, as well as with bigger responsibility for the result.

Defence and cautions:

Yellow cards Red cards Fouls Tackles Aerials Offsides Throw-ins
WC 2022 3.22 0.05 24.19 31.58 26.62 3.87 39.91
WC 2018 3.34 0.06 26.41 31.80 37.97 2.62 40.20
EPL 2022/23 3.55 0.08 20.62 34.11 26.80 3.27 39.12
Violation statistics show that there are significantly more fouls at World Cups than in EPL, while there are fewer cards (both yellow and red). There is no clear trend in tackles, offsides and throw-ins.

We can also note the decrease in the number of longballs and aerials at the World Cup 2022 (and EPL 2022/23) compared to the World Cup 2018. It seems that modern football is becoming less vertical.

We hope that our analysis of World Cup statistics will help you better understand the play of national football teams. And soon we expect the resumption of home championships and even more good football!

https://corner-stats.com/wc-2022-tournament-stats-comparison-with-wc-2018-and-epl/info/391
If you have not read the first part of the study from the Corner-stats.com team about 4 levels of football analysis, you can do it by clicking on the link https://corner-stats.com/level-of-football-team-development-strategy-football-analysis-part-1/info/390

Let us decipher in more detail the factors that determine the development strategy of a football team (1st level of football analysis):

- financial resources available to the football club. A FC may receive income from its commercial activities (tickets, merchandise, sponsors, etc.), players sales or investor money. Successful commercial activity allows you to systematically develop the team. And if the club is lucky enough to successfully sell a player or attract a rich investor, then this can fundamentally change the team's development strategy.

- the football philosophy of the owner(s) of the club. Some owners consider a football club solely as a business project, others care about what kind of football their team will play and, based on this, the coach and players are selected.

- the quality of football club management. FC managers interact with various stakeholders - fans, investors, players, coaches, agents, sponsors, representatives of football organizations and government bodies. The atmosphere in the team and the prospects for its development depend on the quality of this interaction.

- transfers policy - these are the principles of forming the squad of a football team. Sometimes the team development strategy comes from the transfer policy. For example, when a football club aims to develop its own players with their subsequent sale

- the development of football in the country where the team plays. The quality of the development of the league where the team plays, and football in the country in general, can affect the team both positively and negatively (for example, if the team does not have strong competitors in the league, which reduces the motivation to play at full strength).

Each of the factors can be decisive in whether a football team development strategy will be successful. Thus, if a bettor at a bookmaker evaluates these factors better than the bookmaker, he can expect to profit from betting on or against the team in the long run.
The time has come for the decisive matches in the 2022/23 European Cups campaign, the teams will play the return legs of the quarter-finals.

The key point in the return matches is the score of the first match, that is, already before the start of the match, it is known whether the team needs to win back or play to keep the score. Based on this, it would be advisable to use the statistics analysis tool on the site Corner-stats.com Match intervals (statistics of a team at intervals when the team is winning, drawing or losing). You can read more about the Match Intervals tool at https://corner-stats.com/match-intervals-filter-functionality-expanded/info/313

For example, yesterday Milan started the second leg against Napoli with a score of 1-0 in their favor. In the hotlines on the Corner-stats.com website, you may have noticed the hint "AC Milan has the lowest total offsides in Serie A (Italy) on the intervals when a team is winning in a match (2.01)". That is, if Milan is winning in a match, you should not expect a large number of offsides.

Similarly, we can consider the situation in today's Champions League matches. For Inter, we should be interested in how the team plays if they are winning in a match, for Benfica - the team's statistics when they are losing in a match. And similarly for Man City and Bayern.

We hope you have grasped how our Match Intervals tool works and can benefit from it. Good football and successful bets!
How to analyze friendly matches of national teams. Does the result matter?

Teams play friendly matches to prepare for official matches. Unlike club friendly matches, national team matches are much more interesting, because the national teams do not play as often and the team plays for their country. Based on this, the result of friendly matches is of course important.
But on the other hand, the team coach needs to test his work and also check the entire roster of players. It is often difficult to assess the readiness and mood of national team players for a frendly match. In addition, it happens that the coaching staff rests leading players or experiments with tactics. These factors add uncertainty to the game, which often leads to sensational results.
The absolute “leader” in sensations in recent friendly matches is the German national team. How will Germany play against Ukraine today?
