🥧 Nothing says fall like a home-baked apple pie! 🍏 When it comes to preparing this seasonal dessert, which type of apple do many bakers avoid using? And what is going on inside the oven as the pie is being baked?

In this blog post, we test 2 types of apples for their pie-worthy qualities, as well as model how heat transfers through a pie while baking:

55 minutes vs. 7 hours 30 minutes

That's how much faster it is to solve this submarine model in COMSOL Multiphysics version 6.2 compared to the previous software version. (At 6 kHz with 2.5M DOFs on 6 cluster nodes.)

🔊 The Acoustics Module of the newly released COMSOL Multiphysics version 6.2 is out now! It is packed with new functionality that extends what can be simulated and simplifies the setup of models.

👋 In this version we introduce the tools to easily and automatically analyze and set up frequency dependent impedance conditions in the time domain. This is important in many applications, one of them is for wave-based room acoustic simulations (as in the animation, taken from a new tutorial model).

✈️ Port conditions are now available for the linearized potential flow formulation for modal source decomposition, typically used for the analysis of sound radiation from turbo-jet engine flow ducts.

🎙 A new slip wall formulation is available in thermoviscous acoustics, further extending the validity of the continuum formulation in MEMS devices. We have also introduced a surface tension feature in thermoviscous acoustics for modeling the vibration of microbubbles or free surfaces in inkjet system.

Surrogate Models

Ever wish you could just press fast-forward on your model? If you build simulation apps, you can now provide your app users with that experience.

The latest version of COMSOL Multiphysics lets you create and use data-driven surrogate models in your simulation apps, so your app users can go from inputs to results much faster than before. Learn more here:

Great news! WavePro® is included in the latest release of COMSOL, Inc.’s material library, allowing designers to select our materials.

Pictured here: Enhanced gain of an aperture antenna achieved using a ceramic-filled PTFE dielectric lens made from WavePro® WP025LDf low-loss dielectric material. The computation for this conical horn antenna was expedited using the 2D axisymmetric formulation in COMSOL, Inc.'s Multiphysics® software.

RANS vs URANS vs DES turbulence modeling on NACA 0012 AOA25DEG Vorticity.

RANS stands for Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes.

It is a method that averages the flow variables over time to obtain a mean flow field and then models the effect of turbulence using additional equations for the turbulent fluctuations.

RANS models are computationally efficient and widely used for industrial applications, but they have limitations in capturing complex flow features and unsteady phenomena.

URANS stands for Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes.

It is a method that solves the RANS equations in a time-dependent manner, allowing for some unsteady effects to be captured.

DES stands for Detached-Eddy Simulation.

It is a hybrid method that combines RANS and LES in different regions of the flow domain.

DES models are less costly than LES models, but they can suffer from numerical issues at the interface between RANS and LES zones.
