it doesn’t really matter how many books you’ve read, what matters is which books you’ve chosen to read and how long and hard you’ve thought about what you’ve read

Tomorrow at 8 PM EST I’ll be joined by Charlie reacting to the recent dialogue between Tim Flanders and Mike Lewis of Where Peter Is

It’ll basically serve as my definitive takedown of the Where Peter Is approach to the current Pontificate and crisis in the Church

“[A]gainst the doctrine of Scripture, of the Church, and of the Holy Fathers, [naturalists] assert that ‘that is the best condition of civil society in which no duty is recognized, as attached to the civil power, of restraining offenders against the Catholic religion” - Pius IX

(taken from an excerpt from his encyclical Quanta cura, after which Pius IX makes the above condemnation infallible, ex cathedra, definitive papal teaching)

the only way I can read what Francis said in an orthodox way is if he means that God doesn’t desire ecclesiastical law to replace the civil law, which of course is true

but the civil law in a just society would be willing to serve the law of the Church as its instrument

more to the point though, this is extremely problematic and as Catholics we have to mentally prepare for doctrinal discrepancies like this and how to deal with them

there’s a way to do it without even being a recognize & resist SSPX trad, but some of you need to get your head out of the sand

natural law theory simultaneously elevates man above the rest of the corporal cosmos yet also derives his morality from the Divinely instituted universal pattern of the Good that obtains when *any* existing thing whatsoever conforms to the teleological demands of its nature

it’s human focused to be sure but not exactly anthropocentric

If someone were to corner me into giving my honest opinion about how many papal “errors” we’d likely have to contend with over the last century, realistically it only seems to come down to a few issues, at least based on a probable interpretation of the texts:

the emancipation of women (Amoris Laetitia/Mulieris dignitatem vs Casti connubii and Arcanum divinæ), church and state relations (JPII/Francis speeches vs Quanta cura), the relationship between conscience and sin (Amoris laetitia vs Veritatis splendor), and the per se moral permissibility of the death penalty (Fratelli tutti vs Innocent III’s Professio fidei to the Waldensians)

In each case the more traditional doctrine is codified in weightier magisterium, so while this is a headache to sift through, the discrepancies are few in number and each one of them is easy to resolve

I don’t think Pope Francis will say anything against the doctrine of the Church on contraception, but it’s statements like this that underscore the importance of recognizing that Pius XI spoke infallibly when he condemned contraception in Casti connubii, in case a future pope ever dares to teach otherwise
🔥117🤮43👍1
imagine thinking this condemnation of contraception by Pius XI isn’t ex cathedra and therefore infallible

Pius XI a) speaks by virtue of his supreme apostolic authority b) defines a matter of morals, and c) manifests an intention to bind all the faithful absolutely to hold this doctrine
