It is narrated in Imām al-Bukhārī’s Ṣaḥīḥ that when Sayyidunā Saʿd ibn Muʿādh approached while the Ṣaḥāba were seated with the Prophet ﷺ, the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ then commanded them to stand up to welcome their leader (the best among them).
This is how the Prophet ﷺ cultivated respect in the hearts of the Companions — teaching them to stand in honour of their leaders, superiors, parents, respected elders, and teachers. He ﷺ taught them to rise and go forward to receive such individuals upon their arrival.
Similarly, it was the practice (Sunnah) of the Companions that whenever the Prophet ﷺ would leave a gathering, they would also rise in his honour. As recorded in Sunan Abī Dāwūd, Sayyidunā Abū Hurayrah reports that when the Prophet ﷺ was sitting with them, and when he stood up to leave, the Ṣaḥāba also rose and remained standing, watching him until he entered his home.
