As per IAS 37 Provisions, Contingent Liabilities and Assets, companies cannot provide for future operating losses in the PnL, however can do for an Onerous Contract.

Therefore if a company thinks that by continuing the business in future, they will make a loss, they may be tempted to put a provision, however the standard says since there is no compulsion on company to continue and make loss, hence no present obligation which would need to be provided for.

On the other hand, an Onerous Contract (loss making) can be provided for, since the company will have to complete the work and incur losses or pay penalty for not completing the work, hence will need to provide the lower of the 2 possibilities.

All of the above is to ensure stakeholders get a faithful and relevant presentation, the fundamental requirements of IFRS framework!
