ββThe True Value of Pieces
By Dejan Bojkov
Queen against two rooks or three minor pieces, as well as a rook plus pawn vs two minor pieces - these are typical constellations where the material is unbalanced. In our first steps in chess we are taught about the nominal value of the pieces. The queen is equal to nine pawns; a rook to five, a minor piece is worth three pawns. This is a common sense solution aimed at teaching the beginner a system of values so that he or she does not trade a more valuable piece for a less good one. Later however, situations occur in games in which one side can trade two minor pieces (six pawns) for a rook and a pawn (also six pawns). Theoretically speaking, this should result in an equal position, but in reality one of the two sides will profit from the exchange. There are many cases of material imbalance in chess. In his new DVD GM Dejan Bojkov of Bulgaria makes an attempt to systematise the most important ones and gives valuable advice on how to handle the resulting positions. He also explains the hidden factors behind the imbalances, explanations which will guide you through the art of exchanging pieces.

Wild and Wicked β The Mason-Keres Gambit in 60 Minutes
by Daniel King
You thought the usual Kingβs Gambit was crazy? Try this variation. On the third move, after 1 e4 e5 2 f4 exf4, White plays 3 Nc3 β discouraging β¦d5, but allowing 3β¦Qh4+ pushing the king up the board: 4 Ke2. But there is method in this madness β White is going to play the knight to f3 to gain time against the queen. Korchnoi and Zak described 3 Nc3 as βA risky move leading to great complications in which a single inaccurate move by either side can have fatal consequences.β If thatβs the kind of chess you like playing, you are in the right place.
It was first played by the legendary Irish player James Mason in Paris in 1878. The first strong player to explore the line was a young Paul Keres in the early 1930s in a series of correspondence games. Which explains why it is often known as the Mason-Keres Gambit. With the current trend in online games for the king to advance early on, you might also call it the Bong Cloud Gambit. Magnus Carlsen has played it in online games. Kasparov played it in a blitz game against Karjakin. Richard Rapport is the strongest player to play it in a classical game β with success. I have some experience with this line: I played it in my wild teenage years β with fantastic results. If you want to confuse your opponent, this could be a great way to do it. The download is broken down into five videos going into the detail of Blackβs main options. Interestingly, computers often think that Whiteβs position is satisfactory. In variations where the machines frown upon Whiteβs set-up, some tricky human ideas are recommended to keep the game tasty. Have courage, have fun, and good luck!

The Flexible Open Spanish
by Sipke Ernst
The Open Spanish is considered to be one of the soundest systems in modern opening theory. It remains a popular choice among superstars such as Mamedyarov, Caruana , So and Giri and was used in World Championship matches by Korchnoi and Anand.
The Open Spanish arises after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.O-O Nxe4. In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game. Black can go for long forced variations that lead to sharp endgames or choose a slower game with more pieces on the board. Therefore, the Open Spanish is not only an excellent weapon against stronger players, but also gives plenty of scope for the outplaying of βlesser ratedββ opponents. This DVD offers a full repertoire for Black against 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 and gives you a great arsenal of ideas against all the topical lines.

Pieces, Pawns and Squares
by Adrian Mikhalchishin
It is known that pieces are more difficult to handle than pawns - but sometimes they can help each other, e.g. if it is about conquering a square! But what to do once you have gained control over it? How can the advantage of the new stronghold be exploited? All this and much more is shown on this DVD. Special attention is paid to the technique of piece transfer which helps to coordinate different attacks much more effectively. Treated themes: how to create weaknesses, how to conquer and exploit important squares, the powerful helping pawn, piece transfer to strongholds, coordination in the attack.

Understanding Material Imbalances by Svitlana Demchenko
One of the first lessons we are taught in the beginning of our chess journey is how much every piece on the board is βworthβ. However, the more we master the game, the more we realize that the βtrueβ value of pieces can differ from their theoretical value, depending on the subtleties of the position. When faced with material imbalances, it can be challenging to come to a correct evaluation and decide which plans to pursue. This DVD focuses on several types of material imbalances, such as Rook vs 2 Minor Pieces, Queen vs 2 Rooks, and Queen vs Pieces. In this series, you will learn some general guidelines.
