Pakistan How the Springboks, not the Proteas, have told a great story

One of the less palatable stories in South African sport in the last five years is the unwritten story of how envious all the other sports are of the World Cup-winning Springboks. Privately Cricket South Africa (CSA) staff bristle at the Boks' double success in 2019 and 2023. They ask public-relations companies to send out online questionnaires on how the Proteas might emulate the Springboks. They wonder what they can do to emulate the Springboks themselves.

The Springboks have not only been successful, they have told a story, a story which has deepened and gained credence through them becoming successful. Broadly put, the story is this: South Africa is a country of many cultures and many tribes. These tribes play rugby. Some of them play rugby with brute strength; others play rugby with speed and finesse. Some tribes do both.
