Cambodia’s Economic Diversification Pathways – Professor Ricardo Hausmann
Australia hosted a high-level workshop on 20 February 2025 that explored growth strategies to diversify Cambodia’s economy and build a more resilient economic future. The workshop, supported by Australia’s flagship Cambodia Australia Partnership for Resilient Economic Development (CAPRED), featured a special guest Professor Hausmann who is the founder and Director of Harvard’s Growth Lab with international expertise in the development of the Growth Diagnostics and Economic Complexity methodologies.
H.E. Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia, H.E. Vongsey Vissoth, Permanent Deputy Prime Minister in Charge of the Office of the Council of Ministers, and H.E. Derek Yip, Australian Ambassador to Cambodia, presided over the workshop. Representatives from the Office of the Council of Ministers, government line ministries and development partners were also in attendance.
The workshop underscored Australia’s ongoing commitment to promoting strategic policy dialogue for a stronger, more prosperous Cambodia.

With the support of the Australian Government, Cambodia’s Ministry of Women's Affairs of Cambodia kicked off its national campaign for the 114th International Women’s Day under the theme “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.”
The campaign featured three free public events in Phnom Penh, showcasing powerful performances by Epic Arts, Chhloh Theater, and leading women’s rights advocacy groups. The campaign also included a digital initiative and a special edition of Neary Rattanak magazine.
Through CAPRED, Australia is committed to advancing opportunities for women persons with disabilities, and other marginalised groups to ensure everyone benefits from economic growth.

Australian Water Association supported the Cambodian Water Supply Association (CWA) to develop their new strategy for2025-2030 focusing on strengthening the capacity of private water operators, improving service quality, and enhancing resilience in water supply systems—particularly in hard-to-reach communities.
H.E. Hem Vanndy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation, and Ms Kirsty Harris, Development Counsellor at the Australian Embassy, joined the CWA Annual General Assembly to launch the strategy to the CWA’s 300 members.
This collaboration through CAPRED is part of Australia’s ongoing commitment to help Cambodia to achieve its goal of clean water for all by 2030.

Australia, through Cambodia Australia Partnership for Resilient Economic Development (CAPRED), invited Professor Ricardo Hausmann, founder and director of Harvard’s Growth Lab, to Cambodia in February to lead a high-level workshop on economic diversification strategies and to meet with leaders from government, development partners and the private sector.
Professor Hausmann closed his visit by sharing his reflections on Cambodia’s economic trajectory and priorities and Australia’s contribution in supporting Cambodia’s economic transformation.
