The U.S. State Department has announced an indefinite suspension of immigrant visa processing for 75 countries, effective January 21, 2026.

This policy targets nations where the administration believes immigrants are most likely to utilize public welfare programs, citing a need to protect the U.S. economy and national security.

While permanent residency applications are paused, non-immigrant visas for tourism and business remain active for now.

The freeze will stay in place until the State Department completes a full reassessment of its vetting and screening procedures.

In May 1991, cosmonaut Sergei Krikalev launched into space aboard the Mir space station as a citizen of the Soviet Union.

While he orbited Earth every 90 minutes, history below him changed.

By December 1991, the Soviet Union collapsed. New borders were drawn. The flag was lowered. Even his hometown, Leningrad, was renamed to Saint Petersburg.

When Krikalev finally returned to Earth in March 1992, the country he left no longer existed. He landed not in the USSR but in the Russian Federation.

He became the only person in history to watch a superpower disappear from orbit.

Named after an 11th-century nobleman named Focko, the village of Fucking remained a quiet Austrian hamlet for nearly 800 years. However, in the internet age, its name transformed it into a global punchline. Tourists traveled hundreds of miles to pose provocatively by the entrance signs, which were stolen so frequently that the town eventually had to install theft-proof concrete foundations.
By 2020, the community had reached its breaking point. Fed up with the prank calls and the constant disruption of their peace, residents voted for change. On January 1, 2021, the village officially became Fugging. The signs were replaced, the maps were updated, and the viral fame finally faded, leaving the villagers with the one thing they wanted most: silence.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed serious concern about the use of force by U.S. federal law enforcement after a recent fatal shooting in Minneapolis, where a man was killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents during a protest.

At an energy conference in Hamburg, Merz said he expects U.S. authorities to carry out a full, transparent investigation to determine whether the shooting was necessary and if the officers truly faced a threat. He called the level of violence in the United States worrying.

Merz stressed the importance of an independent and clear inquiry into whether the use of firearms was justified.

The death of 37-year-old Alex Pretti, a U.S. citizen shot dead by federal agents in Minneapolis, has sparked large protests and intense debate about federal use of force, especially after a similar fatal shooting earlier in the month.

Merz also said he expects the investigations to clarify whether the agents acted lawfully and whether their decision to use guns was reasonable.
