St John Henry Newman of the Oratory is well known for his great intellectual works and his pastoral sermons. Perhaps less well known are the struggles he faced in holding fast to the truth that he found in the Catholic Church. His conversion to Catholicism was at the sacrifice of his position in society, his friends, his colleagues, his income, and even opposition from his family.

In light of some of the difficulties currently facing the Church we can look to Newman's essay "The Development of Christian Doctrine" in which he gives us principles to assess genuine development of doctrine from error, explaining those principles originally outlined by St Vincent of Lerin. Genuine developments in understanding of doctrine must maintain continuity with the original deposit of faith, ensuring that the core beliefs of the Church remain intact. That it should exhibit a logical and coherent progression from earlier teachings, avoiding abrupt and radical shifts.

----

Let us pray
O God, who bestowed on the Priest Saint John Henry Newman the grace to follow your kindly light and find peace in your Church; graciously grant that, through his intercession and example, we may be led out of shadows and images into the fulness of your truth. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Let us make the most of these few remaining days of Advent!
On the third day of Christmas we also celebrate St John the Apostle!

St John was not just an Apostle, but an intimate friend to Jesus. He is the Prince of Virginity, for he offered his whole soul and body as a sacrifice to our Lord. His chastity gave him a special place of nearness and intimacy with God, so much so that he was the beloved disciple of Our Lord.

It is fitting we celebrate his feast in the midst of Christmas, for surviving all the other Apostles, he was requested by the Church to write down his Gospel to respond to heretics who denied the divinity of Christ. Thus his Gospel teaches us the Word was God, and the Word was made flesh.

It was at the foot of the cross, when he took Mary as his mother, and Mary took him as her Son, thus he became Christ's brother.

---
Mercifully, O Lord, enlighten thy Church: that being taught by blessed John, thine Apostle and Evangelist, she may come to thy eternal rewards. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

What is the 40 Hours Devotion?

During the Forty Hours devotion the Blessed Sacrament is solemnly exposed for adoration and prayer.

The devotion started in Milan in 1527 as a way for the community to make reparation for sin and to ask for God’s special protection.

The Forty Hours is in imitation of the forty days of fasting of the Lord in the desert, and the time of unceasing prayer called for in Scripture.

Over time it also became a devotion of thanksgiving for the mystery of the Eucharist.

It is an opportunity for us as a community to bring our personal petitions to God, but also to pray for the community, the Bishops and the Pope, for the good of the whole Church, and for the graces of conversion for the world.

The 40 Hours Devotion is like a parish retreat, and we strongly encourage all parishioners and visitors to make a visit to the Blessed Sacrament during the 40 Hours Devotion, and attend some of the special events happening at this time.
