My review of Toxic Positivity by Whitney Goodman

Have you ever felt the pressure to always be positive, even when things are tough?

In a world where we're constantly bombarded with messages to "stay positive" and "look on the bright side," this book reveals how this mindset can actually be harmful.

The author explores the dark side of forced positivity and teaches us how to embrace all our emotions, even the negative ones.

Here are many of my favorite quotes from the book:

• We force positivity on ourselves because society tells us to, and anything less is a personal failure. Negativity is seen as the enemy, and we chastise ourselves and the people around us when they succumb to it.

• When we use toxic positivity, we're more focused on saying the thing we've been told to say than genuinely listening to, connecting with, and learning about the person in distress.

• So many of us get stuck in this trap. We're trying to look happy on social media before we actually address how we feel inside.

When people ask us how we're feeling we lie and say "Great!" with a forced smile. We're terrified of what will happen if we stop pretending. Will I scare them away? Will they be able to handle how I really feel? Best not to risk it, right?

• This is what toxic positivity does to us. It traps us in a life of pretending until we can't do it anymore. It tells us that if someone has it worse, we can't be sad. If there's something to be grateful for, gratitude

• Gratitude, like happiness, has become a moral obligation that we must fulfill. Without it, our culture tells us, you're probably doomed to a life of sadness and loneliness. Every moment demands the presence of gratitude and it is exhausting.

• Toxic positivity has a large impact on our ability to connect emotionally. We're afraid to share how we're feeling because we'll appear "negative" or "ungrateful." The pressure to have it all and do it all keeps us trapped in beautifully decorated cages.

It's a very refreshing and eye-opening read!

This book is still in my top 3 favorite books of all time

It is one of the first books I've read, and that motivated me to read even more.

It should be the first one you read if you want to learn more about emotions, mindset and personal development.

Here are some of the many great quotes you'll find in this book:

• Your emotions can act like a powerful guide. They can tell you something is wrong and allow you to make changes in your life. As such, they may be among the most powerful personal growth tools you have.

• One of a human being's greatest powers is our ability to use our thoughts to shape our reality and interpret events in a more empowering way.

• Your emotions act like magnets. They attract thoughts on the same 'wave'. That's why, when you're in a negative state, you easily attract other negative thoughts, and by latching onto these thoughts you make the situation worse.

• A problem only exists when you give it your attention. From your mind's perspective, what you don't give any thought to doesn't exist.

• Your thoughts define who you are and create your reality. That's why you should channel your thoughts towards what you want, not what you don't want.

• Self-awareness is one of the most important components of your personal growth. Without it, you can't do much to change your life, since you can't change a problem unless you realize it exists.

• The fear of doing something new is often a sign you should go ahead and do it anyway. This indicates a great opportunity for personal growth.
