Stock markets posted sharp declines on Monday. Japanese stocks fell 13 per cent as fears that the United States could slip into recession led investors to de-risk, betting that a quick rate cut would be needed to rescue economic growth. The flood of selling was such that exchanges across Asia experienced automatic electronic system shutdowns - the first since 2008.

The yuan jumped to as high as 7.1125 per dollar, trading at a premium to Beijing’s so-called fixing and close to erasing this year’s losses. That’s a sign market sentiment had turned more positive, after concerns over China’s growth eased. @LauraRuHK

You can hear the panic in the news reporters: "We have never been down 1,000+ points — EVER, not even intraday — on the Nasdaq."

The Dow and Nasdaq were both down more than 1,000 points after Monday’s opening bell amid a massive selloff triggered by the meltdown in Japan and renewed fears of a US recession.

Some of the world’s largest tech companies saw their stocks get hammered early Monday. Nvidia, Meta, and Apple all lost 6% of their market capitalization.
