Just reached 200k net worth at 34 years old

Hltk51 @ DraftKings

I'm very happy by this acomplishment. I know i'm probably in the bottom 10% poorest people on blind and most of blind reaches 1 million net worth by age 24, but this is still a big milestone for me, i came to the US 3 years ago and 0 net worth, then landed my first SWE job and have been building up since then. And coming from a very poor country i'm happy with where i'm at.

Don't compare yourself to others, be happy with what you have. Every one has their own timeline and pace in life.

I can identify 90% of people on Blind

pySK82 @ Microsoft

It’s crazy that most of you think you are anonymous and spew nonsense but trust me I can identify 90% of you. I actually know at least 20 people here without their knowledge. Here’s how I know.

I try to find one other data point about you other than where you currently work. If for instance you announce that you were at Meta and accepted an offer last month at Google, I can go to LinkedIn and find in a few seconds using the advanced search tool former Meta employees and scope it down to “moved to Google in the last 30 days” and that usually returns like less than 10 people and I can figure out the rest with a bit of investigation.

I can easily find all of your previous posts and comments and piece together two or three data points and find you. I have literally found at least 20 people this way. So if anyone calls me names or runs their mouth on me, you’re messing with the wrong person. I will humble you real quick.

Hit 2.5M NW and thinking seriously on FIRE

ITEL54 @ Apple

Hit 2.5M net worth today. Have been putting almost all of my income on investment. I see myself as a super introvert so not a huge fan of casual chatting with colleagues, just minding my own business. Have been thinking of FIRE for quite some time, but not having a firm plan so far. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Just accidentally found out my coworker has offers in hand from a competitor. Should I tell management?

ghd564 @ Apple

Just accidentally found out via screen share that my coworker is likely going to a competitor in the app development infra space. They asked me not to tell anyone.

Should I tell management before they can leave so we can plan their transition better?

A Girl's Perspective on Bay Area Men

lownhq @ Meta

Hi everyone, as a gal, I am offering you my view on why many of you are not getting laid for years on end. First of all, most tech workers over here are bottom of the barrel in terms of sexual attraction anywhere in the world. Your job and salary and maybe education can compensate to a point, but they still don't fully address the attraction gap. If you moved elsewhere in the United States, you won't do much better. If you go to a 3rd world non-white country, you might do a lot better due to different standards of beauty. Second, being a millionaire SWE with a TC over 500k over here is not that big of a deal especially when the guy is too busy with work most of the time and boring outside of work. Girls want someone who makes their lives better and more interesting, not a drone with a bigger bank account. Third, there area lots of high quality men in the Bay Area and tech guys are at the bottom of the pyramid. There are men with generational wealth, corporate execs, successful startup founders, VCs, private equity guys, not to mention doctors, lawyers, and professors at Berkeley and Stanford. SWEs are just the minions who work for all these other people to put it bluntly. At the director level, tech guys start to have a chance to compete with other types of guys. I personally put an engineering director at first and second tier companies on the same level as a successful doctor or big law lawyer.

What I said above applies for women under the age of 35. Between the ages of 35 to 40, women will start to lower their standards especially if the man is younger than her. The market skews in favor of men starting around the age of 40 as women start thinking about menopause.

Yes, I know this is harsh, but I think knowing the truth can't hurt because then you can plan accordingly. The bar for men in the Bay Area is really high and it's not fair for you guys. But that's how the world is.

Intuit layoffs have been the WORST in ALL of Tech!

gEmInI@G @ Google

A couple of my friends got impacted recently and this whole situation is extremely infuriating. They were high performers and then labeled them as low performers publicly ?! What sort of narrative are they trying to go after by pulling this BS ?

Hell one of them never even received feedback for this HY and their manager posted their feedback on July 11th after the layoff - basically retrofitting the narrative! They were a high performer in the mid-year feedback and were recently commended by the org VP. 🤷🏽‍♂️
This company seems to be based purely on ass licking or god knows what.

Now they want to hire 1800 people ? No one who values their mental health, should be joining this clown of a CEO or his dumpster-fire company.

move back to china and fire?

Dave Ramse @ LinkedIn

32 year old, 7 yoe, current have about 3.7 mil here is the breakdown

realestate: about 4.3mil - 2.3 mil loan
stock+cash: 1.4 mil
401k: 300k

one kid

i always thinking when i can go back to china an fire in there, i had an 2b2b apartment in beijing fully paid off, parents in china run bussiness an fetching about $1mil each year..

for my calculation, if i moved to shanghai, i need to spend like $10000 monthly to have a great quality of life, river front apartments, luxury gym membership, nanny and personal chief at home, i can take trip to japan every month, my kid can go to best kindergarden where teacher kids ratio is about 1:2, the cost is just about $1200, all the teacher speaks english like native...

i think it is still bit hard for me to use my liquid asset to generate 120k a year... may be i should sale on of my property to boost my liquid asset to 2mil and move back to shanghai and enjoy great quality of life?

the reason i want to make that decision is that bay area is just too fcking expensive.. you literally spend most money and get zero quality of service, and if i move back to shanghai my quality of life will be increase dramaticlly with the less amount of money i spend in bay area

Got laid off today from MSFT today

kna168 @ Segment

I knew this was coming as my manager hinted about this two months ago. I did prepare proactively and gave 4 - 5 interviews but failed every single one.

I feel like giving up on life as I don’t know what to do. Getting an offer is so hard these days.

I simply wish I didn’t exist anymore.

You still don’t fully grasp the severity of Crowdstrike outage

Jeff’s son @ Amazon

Since last night, 50 million+ windows computers crashed or saw the blue screen of death after the crowdstrike update. Some news outlets are reporting that the number is much much higher.

Steps to resolve -

1. Boot windows system in safe mode .
2. Delete crowd strike files
3. Restart
4. Repeat for every single crashed system in your company
5. Many companies don’t even allow employees to boot to safe mode and require decryption keys or other mechanism. Good luck fixing computers in these companies.

Do you think 100’s of thousands of people working at banks, restaurants, airlines etc knows how to boot into safe mode?

This outage will take days to resolve.

Life is Rigged for Hard-working Men

mlknpzlen @ Meta

For a typical ambitious and hardworking man, society is rigged against him. In his childhood, he works super hard to get good grades and get into a good college. After college, he works hard to get a good high paying job. At work, he works hard to make more money and raise his employment status. But after excelling at all of these, he finds that none of this helps his ability to find a mate and if anything puts him at a disadvantage, so he has to start from scratch all over again to compete in the dating market. This going through life in hard mode.

Microsoft is 100% at fault

GoliMaar @ Meta

So many folks on Blind and LinkedIn saying there is no Microsoft issue, it is within Kernel space.

Microsoft and Satya is 100% at fault.

- Satya removed people from Windows and heavily disinvested their QA and testing procedures for Windows. App compatibility testing was part of this. Windows also became so bad over time that lead to rise of companies like CrowdStrike
- bad kernel code from third party happens with every OS. But reboot handles disabling of continuously crashing apps.
- App updates- macOS handles this much better for third party apps by staggering it. If you are running a platform, it is your responsibility to make sure one single app cannot bring down entire platform

Google needs to PIP these influencers that work 4h

GojoJJK @ Cisco

10:00 start WFH
11:00 goes to lunch
13:45: goes back to work at office
16:30: goes home

Worked less than 4h

So either she's a 10x dev, or she's just coasting, like the rest of googlers

And pls don't bs me on how she gets 8h of work done in 4h. During the work hours, she was just attending meeting, eating snacks, and printing sh.t

Googlers complain about having annual layoffs in Feb under Sundar. Yeah, if SWEs coast like her at google, I would lay them off too.

Feeling low and sad

HakunaMS2 @ Microsoft

I'm a mom of two kids and a woman in tech.
I had always been a topper of my school, college(went to a good college), and got married to love of my life. Joined as SWE at Microsoft and a lead right now. At work, I've always been a top performer.
Somewhere, I stopped being too ambitious and after I had kids and even before, gave everything to the family.
I let my husband switch jobs and he joined FAANG, I supported him at that time and took care of family when he wanted to switch, I remained in MS.
Today, he insulted me with arrogant behavior(not getting into details, related to my work and tech). I felt disrespectful.
I just closed my door, gave my baby to my mom, asking her to tc and my son stayed with my husband and asked them not to disturb me( in anger). I wanted to see if I had it in me - I solved a hard leetcode problem in the 1st attempt and could give a good detailed read on 3 system design questions, all in the span of 2-3 hours of focus time. That felt so good and like my old self.
I felt self sympathy on myself for always giving and never demanding anything back. Though I was always treated well and respected, being insulted today made me feel sad.
Just wanted to let this out :( I hope I take out time for myself and prepare and land job at FAANG and not always hold back myself.
TC: why bother, I'm in MS
