This job market is something else

pySK82 @ Microsoft

This job market is beyond bad. I have had several onsite interviews since late 2022 and it has been getting worse and worse progressively. Every time I interview, it gets 10% worse than the previous month. I’m so mentally drained and checked out due to constant rejections that I interview with not even a hint of hope that I may get an offer and this job market never lets me down.

Initially I thought that I was just not well prepared and that was true because I didn’t realize that the market wasn’t like 2021. Then I got better with preparation and aced almost every single technical round in the last year and I still didn’t get an offer. Every time I get rejected, I go to LinkedIn a few months later and see who the team hired and it’s always someone with 5-10 years more experience than me. That’s when I gave up on this market.

You’re not able to crack this market because you’re literally competing with someone with 5 to 10 years more experience than you for a job a strong junior would have easily gotten in 2021. Many of the jobs I interviewed for remained open for several months because sometimes the hiring manager wants to get a unicorn senior engineer because every month they keep the position open, they get a better candidate on the job market.

Compound interest is crazy

iNKA60 @ Amazon

This is obvious to anyone who understands math, but I’m still amazed to see its effect on my investments and savings as they grow.

When I started saving money after college I would check on my money once in a while and be pleasantly surprised by the minor gains.

I’ve been stockpiling for 5 years now and honestly I’m amazed every time I check my accounts. I’m making over 100 dollars a day without lifting a finger with a combination of ETFs and HYSA.

It’s actually mind boggling how much easier it is to make money when you already have it. And the fact that I’m in my early 30s with decades ahead of me for this virtuous cycle to play out makes it feel even sweeter.

So PSA to the young folks. Don’t spend your money. Invest, save, diversify. A dollar made in your 20s is worth $2.50 in your 40s, and $7 in your 60s, and that’s a conservative estimate. Spending your first RSU vest on a down payment for a 100k car will end up costing you more than you can imagine.

Why don’t people have more kids?

ch2ru @ Meta

Most families we know have 1-2 kids.
But I don’t understand why they don’t have 3-4 instead.
The arguments against this that I hear is lack of time, space and money.

Let me address all of these concerns.

Money - Most engineers make way more than average. And cost of kids don’t scale linearly. Once they are about 5, schooling is also free. I find it hard to believe that tech folks don’t make enough money to feed 1-2 more kids.

Space - Not everyone has to have their own room. This is actually a very recent phenomenon. It is also arguably counterproductive. Kids will need to share a room in college and beyond anyway. Sharing a room helps kids not be asocial.

Time - This is true, but only for the first year of the child. Later on, it’s actually less time, since kids are better able to play with each other than us adults do. They prefer that too.

So curious - why not more kids?

Trump Won. This photo will be in history books

Like it or not, this photo will be in the next edition of every history book in the country. Political violence is completely unacceptable, if you have to resort to physical harm to make your point then it’s not a point worth making.

Girlfriend doesn’t do anything !

lfGl12 @ New

Been together for more than 3 years. She works in healthcare. When have been living together for 3 years as well. Initially she used to help me with house related stuff but soon she stopped.

- She doesn’t read any books, or listen to podcasts or take any courses to keep her knowledge up to date. When I confront her, she just says why she needs to learn anything new 🤦🏻‍♂️
- she doesn’t go to gym. She has gained at least 20 pounds in the last year or so.
- she doesn’t take part in cleaning the house. I pretty much do everything nowadays
- she doesn’t help with grocery shopping either. Just orders noodles or from Amazon and gets herself lots of junk food including instant noodles and snacks. This has exacerbated her weight gain coupled with no workout
- never takes the car to Carwash, gas the car or take the car to oil change while she is the one who is using it everyday (I work from home). She doesn’t even bother looking at tier pressure or anything and unless I check she just doesn’t do it

What does she do the?
- almost all the times is either watching some Honey Boo Boo or waste of time show on Netflix or Chinese movies
- she spends all her time on Instagram and Chinese instagram watching pretty much every junk you can find …
- Designer brand apps and sites
- Fights with me over nonsense

She 36 Chinese
Me 36 white

She hasn’t got promoted in the last 3 years, she doesn’t even go to a beauty salon or even bother going out with her friends. I’m not sure if she has friends anymore also whenever I wanna go to see a friend of mine she starts behaving like a child. She is definitely low in nutritional food as majority of the stuff she eats are junk…

When I confront her about her future, she just says this is why you are working ! And when I tell her what if I die in an accident how would you survive she just simply responds that some other man will take care of me … 🤦🏻‍♂️

What do I do folks?

Just confronted Teen daughter

c5h1b @ Meta

What’s wrong with American 🇺🇸 schools?
Today I found my 14 yr teen ‘practicing’ on a banana in her room. I confronted and she behaved like it’s normal. What’s going on? She goes to the best schools in Bay Area. Maybe other desis can identify?
What’s your experience with your teens?

don't forget to live your life while young

djjfkenxn @ Twitch

no matter how much money we make we will all end up in the same place

if you make or saved enough, don't forget to enjoy experiences while you're young

you don't need all the materialistic things everyone else is grinding for

you don't all need the 5M house in the best neighborhood

you don't all need 20M by 40

you just need happiness

you don't want to end up 50 years old and realize you wasted all your time growing your NW to 100M since not even 100 trillion can buy back your time

don't get lost in the grind and forget why you're working in the first place

I'm in my 40s and wish i grinded less and had more fun.. but now my back hurts and i can't walk for long

- go take that vacation
- dont pressure urself so much at work bc in the end it doesn't matter
- go ask ur crush out
- move to a different country
- do something crazy while u can
- be grateful for ur money it's more than what most ppl will ever see

hope this helps.

Just reached 200k net worth at 34 years old

Hltk51 @ DraftKings

I'm very happy by this acomplishment. I know i'm probably in the bottom 10% poorest people on blind and most of blind reaches 1 million net worth by age 24, but this is still a big milestone for me, i came to the US 3 years ago and 0 net worth, then landed my first SWE job and have been building up since then. And coming from a very poor country i'm happy with where i'm at.

Don't compare yourself to others, be happy with what you have. Every one has their own timeline and pace in life.

I can identify 90% of people on Blind

pySK82 @ Microsoft

It’s crazy that most of you think you are anonymous and spew nonsense but trust me I can identify 90% of you. I actually know at least 20 people here without their knowledge. Here’s how I know.

I try to find one other data point about you other than where you currently work. If for instance you announce that you were at Meta and accepted an offer last month at Google, I can go to LinkedIn and find in a few seconds using the advanced search tool former Meta employees and scope it down to “moved to Google in the last 30 days” and that usually returns like less than 10 people and I can figure out the rest with a bit of investigation.

I can easily find all of your previous posts and comments and piece together two or three data points and find you. I have literally found at least 20 people this way. So if anyone calls me names or runs their mouth on me, you’re messing with the wrong person. I will humble you real quick.

Hit 2.5M NW and thinking seriously on FIRE

ITEL54 @ Apple

Hit 2.5M net worth today. Have been putting almost all of my income on investment. I see myself as a super introvert so not a huge fan of casual chatting with colleagues, just minding my own business. Have been thinking of FIRE for quite some time, but not having a firm plan so far. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Just accidentally found out my coworker has offers in hand from a competitor. Should I tell management?

ghd564 @ Apple

Just accidentally found out via screen share that my coworker is likely going to a competitor in the app development infra space. They asked me not to tell anyone.

Should I tell management before they can leave so we can plan their transition better?

A Girl's Perspective on Bay Area Men

lownhq @ Meta

Hi everyone, as a gal, I am offering you my view on why many of you are not getting laid for years on end. First of all, most tech workers over here are bottom of the barrel in terms of sexual attraction anywhere in the world. Your job and salary and maybe education can compensate to a point, but they still don't fully address the attraction gap. If you moved elsewhere in the United States, you won't do much better. If you go to a 3rd world non-white country, you might do a lot better due to different standards of beauty. Second, being a millionaire SWE with a TC over 500k over here is not that big of a deal especially when the guy is too busy with work most of the time and boring outside of work. Girls want someone who makes their lives better and more interesting, not a drone with a bigger bank account. Third, there area lots of high quality men in the Bay Area and tech guys are at the bottom of the pyramid. There are men with generational wealth, corporate execs, successful startup founders, VCs, private equity guys, not to mention doctors, lawyers, and professors at Berkeley and Stanford. SWEs are just the minions who work for all these other people to put it bluntly. At the director level, tech guys start to have a chance to compete with other types of guys. I personally put an engineering director at first and second tier companies on the same level as a successful doctor or big law lawyer.

What I said above applies for women under the age of 35. Between the ages of 35 to 40, women will start to lower their standards especially if the man is younger than her. The market skews in favor of men starting around the age of 40 as women start thinking about menopause.

Yes, I know this is harsh, but I think knowing the truth can't hurt because then you can plan accordingly. The bar for men in the Bay Area is really high and it's not fair for you guys. But that's how the world is.

Intuit layoffs have been the WORST in ALL of Tech!

gEmInI@G @ Google

A couple of my friends got impacted recently and this whole situation is extremely infuriating. They were high performers and then labeled them as low performers publicly ?! What sort of narrative are they trying to go after by pulling this BS ?

Hell one of them never even received feedback for this HY and their manager posted their feedback on July 11th after the layoff - basically retrofitting the narrative! They were a high performer in the mid-year feedback and were recently commended by the org VP. 🤷🏽‍♂️
This company seems to be based purely on ass licking or god knows what.

Now they want to hire 1800 people ? No one who values their mental health, should be joining this clown of a CEO or his dumpster-fire company.

move back to china and fire?

Dave Ramse @ LinkedIn

32 year old, 7 yoe, current have about 3.7 mil here is the breakdown

realestate: about 4.3mil - 2.3 mil loan
stock+cash: 1.4 mil
401k: 300k

one kid

i always thinking when i can go back to china an fire in there, i had an 2b2b apartment in beijing fully paid off, parents in china run bussiness an fetching about $1mil each year..

for my calculation, if i moved to shanghai, i need to spend like $10000 monthly to have a great quality of life, river front apartments, luxury gym membership, nanny and personal chief at home, i can take trip to japan every month, my kid can go to best kindergarden where teacher kids ratio is about 1:2, the cost is just about $1200, all the teacher speaks english like native...

i think it is still bit hard for me to use my liquid asset to generate 120k a year... may be i should sale on of my property to boost my liquid asset to 2mil and move back to shanghai and enjoy great quality of life?

the reason i want to make that decision is that bay area is just too fcking expensive.. you literally spend most money and get zero quality of service, and if i move back to shanghai my quality of life will be increase dramaticlly with the less amount of money i spend in bay area

Got laid off today from MSFT today

kna168 @ Segment

I knew this was coming as my manager hinted about this two months ago. I did prepare proactively and gave 4 - 5 interviews but failed every single one.

I feel like giving up on life as I don’t know what to do. Getting an offer is so hard these days.

I simply wish I didn’t exist anymore.
