Obsessed over future value of money
sndysuf @ New
Today I chose ramen ($16) over sushi ($35) when I desperately wanted sushi. I had to tell the waiter I was not ready 3 different times because I was so indecisive.
I kept telling myself investing the extra $19 instead of spending it could be worth >$150 in 30 years.
This is a very common theme in my life where I am unwilling to indulge. I am completely able to afford it.
Do other people struggle with this too?

No interviews! What's wrong with my resume?
justAnEmpy @ Bank of America
Hi, I've been applying to everything since January and only have received around 3 interviews. I have probably applied to over 1k jobs since then, most never reply back and some give the generic "we have decided to move forward with other candidates that more closely match our current needs" response.
About me/ my process applying:
In NYC, I apply to pretty much any company that fits my description and mostly remote or hybrid positions. U.S. Citizen.

What makes something a sport and not a game?
🦆🦆✨️ @ Capital One
For instance, why is running a sport but not chess?
Running is literally moving from A to B fast. Chess is directly competing against another person.

Yesterday I lost a close friend due to very low BP. He suffered a cardiac arrest in the middle of the night due to it. Both of us were in the same team at amazon for 5+ years before we got laid off and moved to different companies last year.
He was just 38! Ambitions, TC, titles, net worth are all good things to chase but the most important thing worth chasing is good health. Sit back for a few minutes and think about whats important in life. He has 2 kids. I pray that his family gets strength to recover from this.

How to be happy?
dilbill @ Lyft
I’m 26F, married. My husband and I met in college, I love him but we’ve been having a tough time. It started after I got laid off last year. It’s been a year and I haven’t found anything concrete. A contract gig for 3 months that pays peanuts..it’s affecting my mental health. I feel embarrassed that I went to a great school, worked at a well known company but can’t get any offer. I’m unhappy most days and rely on my husband for emotional support and it’s stressing him out too. He too works in tech so after a day of work, he has to listen to me rant about the 100th interview that didn’t go well/ or went well but still got rejected.
I want to be happy but I just find it hard because I had high aspirations for my career and now I feel behind. I constantly fear that I won’t be able to get a good job. I was okay the last four days as it was the weekend but come Monday I hate my life again.
Many say I’m lucky my husband earns well and can pay my bills but I feel ashamed that I don’t earn as well as I used to. In fact sometimes I wish wasn’t married so I could be unhappy and not have to care how it affects people around me.

Men and Women are NOT equal
PDyh36 @ ex-Tremor Video
Many people do not get this and make their lives miserable.
This is not supposed to be an offensive post.
I do think that Women also needs to be respected and uplifted in many cases, but specially in relationships(Dating), man has to be a leader(superior) and woman has to be a follower to have a successful relationship.
These differences are due to biological hardwiring of both sexes.
We need to accept this fact to live a fulfilling life for ourselves and our loved ones.
You can live against this fact but, in most cases, your life wont be fulfilling.

Netflix vs Meta
h1bstuck @ Uber
Haven't received the final offer from Netflix yet. Also don't work at Uber currently, I was laid off from a startup earlier this year.
1. How would you compare the culture at these 2 companies?
2. Performance Summary Cycle at Meta vs Netflix perf cycle.
3. TC difference not too much of a concern, but heard Meta refreshers stack pretty well, so it can close the gap.
4. Want a stable job with as less stress as possible.
5. Difference in scope of level
EDIT: Wow didn't expect such a one sided poll!
Meta 1st yr TC: 575K
Netflix 1st yr TC: 550k
Blind doesn't count sign on at all.
For me TC isn't the biggest factor, I want a job where there is less stress about perf, PIP, politics. Both companies are hybrid RTO.
Meta team: high impact org, scale probably 10-100x of Netflix team
Netflix team: newish team, less ppl working on this problem, so probably slightly high impact compared to other teams at Netflix

Girlfriend got offer from FAANG in US and broke up with me
nabo34 @ Novo Nordisk
My girlfriend received an offer from a FAANG company in the US while we live in Poland. She told me that I'm not ambitious and that I'm wasting my life watching football and drinking beer. She said she would be better off alone because I'm holding her back, wished me well, and broke up with me. Now she's moving to the US. She said she wants to own a huge house in NYC and live a dream life, and doesn't want to end up living a mediocre life like she believes I will.

To say "cut off workers didn't meet bar" clearly, not as a coward to say "business decision".
In my 20y experience, all the managers that I know are trained to say "business decision" just to avoid issues, but 95% of the time, it's performance issue, or they don't see enough value from what they pay you.

Those ex SDE’s will now be unemployable as it will be known that they got pipped.

Unpopular truth: Layoffs are always performance based
M3j1 @ Google
Intuit is only the first one to actually say it.
During layoffs, executives literally sit in meeting rooms asking managers below them for names to put on the layoff list. What names do you think managers will give them? They will obviously pick the less useful/pleasant people.
Comment section will be full of triggered laid off people who are trying to defend their reputation

What is the point of Databricks/Snowflake?
🧱data @ Dell
This is outdated technology. There’s no need for it. All cloud and computer companies do what they offer. And open-source has basically rendered their offering moot.
It’s not 2016 anymore. Databricks should have IPOd long ago.
What do these companies even do? In 2024 how can anyone say they provide value when open source does the same for free?

When picking an employer, don’t turn a blind eye to how they treat their customers and the general public.
If they treat them like 💩 they will eventually treat you the same.
You want to work for a company that treats others with integrity.
It sucks that people have to learn this the hard way, if you were affected, I hope you’ll find a better workplace soon!

This job market is something else
pySK82 @ Microsoft
This job market is beyond bad. I have had several onsite interviews since late 2022 and it has been getting worse and worse progressively. Every time I interview, it gets 10% worse than the previous month. I’m so mentally drained and checked out due to constant rejections that I interview with not even a hint of hope that I may get an offer and this job market never lets me down.
Initially I thought that I was just not well prepared and that was true because I didn’t realize that the market wasn’t like 2021. Then I got better with preparation and aced almost every single technical round in the last year and I still didn’t get an offer. Every time I get rejected, I go to LinkedIn a few months later and see who the team hired and it’s always someone with 5-10 years more experience than me. That’s when I gave up on this market.
You’re not able to crack this market because you’re literally competing with someone with 5 to 10 years more experience than you for a job a strong junior would have easily gotten in 2021. Many of the jobs I interviewed for remained open for several months because sometimes the hiring manager wants to get a unicorn senior engineer because every month they keep the position open, they get a better candidate on the job market.

Compound interest is crazy
iNKA60 @ Amazon
This is obvious to anyone who understands math, but I’m still amazed to see its effect on my investments and savings as they grow.
When I started saving money after college I would check on my money once in a while and be pleasantly surprised by the minor gains.
I’ve been stockpiling for 5 years now and honestly I’m amazed every time I check my accounts. I’m making over 100 dollars a day without lifting a finger with a combination of ETFs and HYSA.
It’s actually mind boggling how much easier it is to make money when you already have it. And the fact that I’m in my early 30s with decades ahead of me for this virtuous cycle to play out makes it feel even sweeter.
So PSA to the young folks. Don’t spend your money. Invest, save, diversify. A dollar made in your 20s is worth $2.50 in your 40s, and $7 in your 60s, and that’s a conservative estimate. Spending your first RSU vest on a down payment for a 100k car will end up costing you more than you can imagine.

Why don’t people have more kids?
ch2ru @ Meta
Most families we know have 1-2 kids.
But I don’t understand why they don’t have 3-4 instead.
The arguments against this that I hear is lack of time, space and money.
Let me address all of these concerns.
Money - Most engineers make way more than average. And cost of kids don’t scale linearly. Once they are about 5, schooling is also free. I find it hard to believe that tech folks don’t make enough money to feed 1-2 more kids.
Space - Not everyone has to have their own room. This is actually a very recent phenomenon. It is also arguably counterproductive. Kids will need to share a room in college and beyond anyway. Sharing a room helps kids not be asocial.
Time - This is true, but only for the first year of the child. Later on, it’s actually less time, since kids are better able to play with each other than us adults do. They prefer that too.
So curious - why not more kids?
