I was running shirtless one day and

hauk_thuo @ Google

A girl was driving by in slow traffic. She honked and waved at me. She wasn't with friends or anything, so it wasn't like a dare or a group of girls being silly. She thought in her head "omg what a sexy man, I should honk".

That was 12 years ago, and I still cherish that memory to this day. Married with 2 kids and I still can't let go of the high I felt.

That's all, folks. Today was leg day, gonna ride a bike down the trail (not shirtless cause now I'm fat), and get some cardio in.

People who get mad at high property tax make me sick

🦆🦆✨️ @ Capital One

You'd rather subsidize your land ownership by taxing everyones income, rather than paying what the land you and only you can use is worth.

Maybe buy a house you can afford rather than crying about having to pay taxes on one you can't.

I have a Toyota Camry and got made fun of by Tesla owner friends

falcon124 @ Amazon

I was at a house party and was talking about a date experience of mine. One of my friends who has a Model Y made fun of me saying "Who picks up a date on a Toyota Camry". Everyone laughed and I just felt like my world is falling apart. I just dont understand why owning a tesla is such a flex?

Why is donating money for good causes ever a flex?

Thinking of Moving to Austin: Is It Too Good to Be True?

SDM_Durden @ Walt Disney

I have a fully remote job and am currently based in California. I'm considering moving to Austin, but it almost seems too good to be true. The rent is less than half of what I pay in the Bay Area, there's no state tax, and the cost of living is dirt cheap for a big city. I'm worried it might just be a mirage. What are your thoughts?

Dealing with quarter life crisis

Zuck1337 @ Meta

I’m 25, work at FAANG, moved abroad to London, my salary is super high compared to most people who live here, yet I feel completely empty. Work isn’t as fun as it used to be (I was extremely passionate about Software Engineering 2 years ago), my personal life is shit since dating in 2024 is literally impossible for an average looking person (even tho I’m tall and white!!). Stuff that used to be fun 10 years ago (e.g. movies, computer games) seems super boring. My parents are quite rich, but I feel extremely poor despite the fact my net worth is close to 400K (I’m from Europe).

How do I deal with this shit? I tried therapy but it didn’t help much besides bringing shit tones of issues from my past.

Walking away from corporate life is so hard

qscbji @ Amazon

I have achieved reasonable NW to be financially independent. However, it is so hard to walk away from corporate life. As I reflect on it, there are a multitude of reasons to feel that way:

(1) the feeling of safety and financial security with a steady income stream.
(2) some sort of societal pressure of questions like “why are you retired at an early age?” And all the negative connotations associated with it.
(3) uncertainties around the medical expenses.
(4) the idea of spending and reducing the NW seems unsettling since I have worked hard to build it up all my adult life so far.
(5) personal goals to leave a secure financial future for my kids as I came from nothing and struggles associated with it.

Early morning musings in an anonymous forum. Time to get off the bed and exercise 😀.

While my husband was in hospital, he was fired.

c7k809 @ Workday

My husband was fired 2 weeks back when he was admitted to the hospital. He has been dealing with health issues and he is on few trial medications, which are very important for his condition. Without a job, we’ll be out of status. He just got of the hospital and still recovering. We have no information on why he was fired or laid off. Any advice is appreciated on how to address this situation. Thank you.

Day in the life of a tech bro in SF

GobbleGPT @ Amazon

>be me, 28-year-old tech bro in SF Bay Area
>make 250k a year but live in a closet-sized apartment
>pay 4k/month for the privilege of smelling homeless pee
>commute 2 hours to work in a $100k Tesla
>arrive at office, step over passed out junkies
>eat $20 avocado toast for breakfast
>spend all day in meetings about "disrupting" industries no one cares about
>lunch is $30 kale smoothie and ethically sourced cricket protein bar
>coworkers won't shut up about their latest microdosing experiment
>leave work at 9pm, no social life outside of startup meetups
>weekend plans: overpriced yoga and complaining about capitalism on $1000 iPhone
>hear people are moving to Texas
>lol imagine living somewhere with affordable housing and no state income tax

The tech job market is dead

H3ll0_u @ Meta

If you have a job, count your blessings. If you got laid off right now, you would not be able to repeat your luck up till now. If you just graduated and looking for work, and not on F1 visa, I'm sorry, you are screwed for the next few years. Look to wash dishes as a stop gap for a while.

It's going to be a rough ride. The Visa market is wide open again after suffering in 2018-2020. The dent that was put in the H1B/H4 visas back then, led to a surge in US hiring which peaked in 2021. Your multiple job offers were due to this. Your high TC was thanks to this time. You can kiss that time, and any future prospects, goodbye. We are back to 2008 job market where companies only want H1B. The tech job market demands for US talent is gone, again. Hoping the next administration will bring the axe down on these programs that flood our tech markets with warm bodies.

How to handle unwanted male attention at work

cBRW11 @ SpaceX

My job is extremely male dominated and while I enjoy it and my team is great, I’ve had a lot of situations lately where some guy I don’t really know approaches me and asks me to get lunch/coffee/hang out outside of work etc. I’d like to believe it’s just friendly except it doesn’t happen to any of the men I work with and these aren’t people I work with in my job that I have any reason to interact with. This might sound like a silly problem to have but it’s been happening more and more and making me feel pretty uncomfortable at work, especially since I’m already self conscious about being one of the few women in my job. How the hell do I handle this? Even if I make an excuse not to, some of them are persistent. Everyone I work with is male so I don’t really have anyone to go to.

To the people commenting about what I wear (which is usually jeans, sneakers and a tshirt or sweatshirt, not trying to avoid this topic) you’re probably part of the problem

Net worth crossed 2.5 M today

ararseaz @ JPMorgan Chase

Don’t know whom to share this with, so sharing here.

Today my NW crossed 2.5 M.

I came to this country with a few hundred dollars over a decade ago. Worked hard over the years, and now feel a sense of achievement ( though money is not everything, it gives a feeling of security)

NW split:

60% brokerage
20% home equity
20% retirement fund

Currently in my late thirties. I want to work hard for the next 8-10 year and retire in my mid forties.

Keep grinding folks!!

Wife made 55k last month on OF. Should I quit and pursue OF?

OFHusband @ ex-Amazon

Wife got laid off earlier in the year. She started OF in March and started getting big in May, and this last month she crossed 50k/mo.

She currently does solo girl content and has wanted to include me but I don’t feel comfortable showing my face and I am worried it will harm my career if I get found. But maybe it won’t matter if I quit and we can do this for a year and potentially semi retire.

I am 32, wife is 28 and we want to start trying for kids at 30, so we have less than 2 years to fully pursue this. Should I quit and pursue OF?

TC 400k (140k paper money)
NW: 2.3m (Think we will need 4m for retirement)

$1M at 34🎉

aws-19937 @ Amazon

Apart from owning a house (1.2M, with $700k debt left) and $50k emergency fund, today I hit $1M. Had to go through a lot, past 12 years where I started my career for $500/month salary.

Edit: I consolidated my positions from couple of other trading platforms to fidelity in last few weeks.

I love fidelity as they pay interest for cash secured puts.

Just fired from Microsoft

looser @ Microsoft

This morning I had an 1:1 with my manager. Normally we meet on Mondays. However, last Monday he rescheduled it. Today at the beginning he asked me how am I. I also asked him how he is. He thanked me and then invited a lady from HR. I immediately understood what is going to happen. The next 10 minutes they explained all termination process and I am now jobless.

It was due to my poor performance. I had two consecutive LITE. That's why it's not a sudden surprise. Unfortunately, I was not able to manage a backup.

I tried heart and soul to get a new job. But I failed. Last February I failed Meta's phone screen and they set the cool down period of one year for me. In addition, last week I failed Amazon's from final virtual onsite. Although I had a great interview they still set one year cool down period for me.

The situation becomes worse due to my OPT. My 60 days timer is now on.

I would appreciate suggestions and action items from the folks who were able to overcome similar tough situations. I'm not confident to get another job within the next 60 days. I'm trying for the last 18-19 months and no luck. That's why I don't see any chance to secure something in the next 60 days. Therefore mostly interested to know the alternative options in these cases.

Hit 4M NW !! Depressed and wanna quit.

MuditUdan @ Amazon

Hit household NW of 4M this week. 3.5M invested and 500K home equity in VHCOL.

I'm burnt out and debating if I should quit in this bad job market without anything lined up??

Spouse makes 350K, which can cover our VHCOL life. Also, 3.5M invested might grow 8-10% / yr and might give additional safety net if needed.

I grew up with money insecurity (like many here), lived in a scarcity mindset all my life, so I can not get myself to quit. Also scared that future managers will take the employment gap negatively.

I should be celebrating my disciplined NW growth, but I'm depressed and miserable. Need advice or alternate evaluation of my situation.

My TC - soon to be 0.
