Offer from meta.

ocidude @ Oracle

I interviewed with meta for a M1 position and got a positive rating from the hiring committee. They started the team match and gave me initial numbers around 550k tc which seems low for the bay area according to levels.fyi.

I am interviewing elsewhere as well but no offers in hand yet. What is the best way to get FB to up their offer?

Thank you in advance

Current TC: 278k base - 325k rsu per year

AMA: SWE > MLE transition

🫡verse @ ex-Meta

I’m d1 at series C, formerly uber-TL at Meta, 14 years in the industry, transitioned from SWE to MLE in 2016, helped many others, hired both at big tech and startup

Seen many questions lately “help me transition to MLE” but no specifics. Happy to speak to any particular issues and give you my 2c.

Disclaimer: as a director I am triple booked in every time slot, I will get to all the questions but it may take a bit of time. Thanks for understanding

28F - Path to 1M net worth

djdieike @ Amazon

I don’t have anyone to share this moment with except for my boyfriend. Yesterday I hit 1M net worth, all liquid, after just under 6 years working in tech. I left college with 15k and saved pretty aggressively as soon as I started my first job. Prioritized tax advantage accounts (back door Roth, megabackdoor Roth, traditional 401k, hsa). But also focused on enjoying my life in the moment; spending quality time with loved ones, taking many vacations, deep conversations.

I have been feeling the happiest I have in my entire life in the 2 years building up to this moment. I grew up with depression, money was held over my head and my only dream was to escape. I never had any dreams other than to get out. Over the years my fear turned into a fear of losing my job and returning to a situation like that. Then that fear melted away.

These fears were all despite being with a boyfriend who is nothing but supportive and loving. Who supports me through extreme personal loss. Gradually this fear melted away. Now I am beginning to have dreams for the first time in my life. Feeling such a deep euphoric feeling when I experience the beauty of nature and feel the love from those around me. I’ve never found myself crying from joy like this before.

These feelings of happiness bring me so much more meaning and true happiness than money could ever. But for me, achieving this financial goal was a key part of my journey. It helped me feel safe enough, for the first time in my life, so I could let go and experience the feelings of happiness.

I don’t understand how Biden lost the debate

lxyz5678 @ Google

I call it a draw.
Biden didn’t look quite energetic, but he did say lot of valid points and highlighted his achievements. He gained points on economy, climate change and abortion rights.
Trump looked more energetic and felt more logical than 2020. Although, many times he was incoherent and didn’t even answer the question he was asked. It didn’t feel like he had valid policies to get anything done.

So overall, it was draw at max, but Trump sure didn’t win.
Although, Biden was worse than I expected.

The debate was painful to watch 😢

hdydh @ Meta

That debate was the most painful shit I’ve ever seen. Trump was a total disaster, confidently spewing bullshit.

If Biden could just talk like a normal person, he would have obliterated Trump. But damn…

I’m still voting for Biden, but I’m seriously concerned.

Average people are like monkeys, looking for signs of physical alpha dominance. Biden didn’t trigger their monkey brains. Trump nails this for the monkey-brained crowd. We’re probably fucked.

Hot take: don't be a "founding engineer"

lyTV21 @ Google

You're not a founder. You get like 0.1% equity but you take on almost the same level of risks as founders financially and career wise, and have the same awful WLB.
Blind community, prove I'm wrong.

Chinese majority teams @Meta

anjdunr @ Meta

Before getting into the details, I am merely stating some facts in this post based on my experience. Not intending to be a racist. There's a difference between calling out ethnic nepotism and being racist. I wish there was more diversity, that's all!

Starting with an example, there's an Engineering Director in ML infra with all the EMs under him and most of his direct and extended reports (&gt90%) being Chinese. This is a clear case of ethnic nepotism.

I feel terrible for the non-Chinese in such teams. I have been part of one such team in the past, and it was one of the worst experiences of my career.

Any team at Meta with a new Chinese EM becomes 90% Chinese in a matter of months, especially if the skip is Chinese.

Most of the critical orgs like GenAI, ML, integrity, etc. are Chinese majority. What is the purpose of banning tiktok citing it as Chinese origin if most of the critical functions in the homegrown alternative are effectively run by the Chinese? Meta apps are used in most of the countries in the world, except China. There should be a reasonable diversity in such critical areas! I consider it very unfair for our users across the world if the products they use everyday are heavily influenced by just one ethnicity.

Zuck and DEI don't care about fixing this. I hope some journalist writes about this and Trump makes this an election issue. Not a Trump supporter, but at this point, he is the only one who can make Zuck fix this!

25F. Got laid off in March. I have 10 days left to stay in the US.

🤔 confuse @ ex-Google

Got offers but they were rescinded because of my visa status (only 1 year left on OPT extension and no H1B). I have an interview scheduled next week but realistically I can't complete the loop in time. My boyfriend doesn't have an H1B or GC either. What are my options if any if I want to stay and can't spend more than 10-11k on it? It seems I have to be employed on or before July 8 or look into a CPT program. Any other options?

Biden's win probability is at 18%

FtrG63 @ Google

According to the betting market (which is usually correct)

Trump 60%
Biden 18%
Gavin Newson 12%
Michelle Obama 3%
Kamala Harris 2%
Hillary Clinton 1%
Robert F Kennedy 1%
Gretchen Whitmer 1%

I can't believe Biden is so low. 18%, that is unbelievable for the sitting president

I was running shirtless one day and

hauk_thuo @ Google

A girl was driving by in slow traffic. She honked and waved at me. She wasn't with friends or anything, so it wasn't like a dare or a group of girls being silly. She thought in her head "omg what a sexy man, I should honk".

That was 12 years ago, and I still cherish that memory to this day. Married with 2 kids and I still can't let go of the high I felt.

That's all, folks. Today was leg day, gonna ride a bike down the trail (not shirtless cause now I'm fat), and get some cardio in.

People who get mad at high property tax make me sick

🦆🦆✨️ @ Capital One

You'd rather subsidize your land ownership by taxing everyones income, rather than paying what the land you and only you can use is worth.

Maybe buy a house you can afford rather than crying about having to pay taxes on one you can't.

I have a Toyota Camry and got made fun of by Tesla owner friends

falcon124 @ Amazon

I was at a house party and was talking about a date experience of mine. One of my friends who has a Model Y made fun of me saying "Who picks up a date on a Toyota Camry". Everyone laughed and I just felt like my world is falling apart. I just dont understand why owning a tesla is such a flex?

Why is donating money for good causes ever a flex?

Thinking of Moving to Austin: Is It Too Good to Be True?

SDM_Durden @ Walt Disney

I have a fully remote job and am currently based in California. I'm considering moving to Austin, but it almost seems too good to be true. The rent is less than half of what I pay in the Bay Area, there's no state tax, and the cost of living is dirt cheap for a big city. I'm worried it might just be a mirage. What are your thoughts?

Dealing with quarter life crisis

Zuck1337 @ Meta

I’m 25, work at FAANG, moved abroad to London, my salary is super high compared to most people who live here, yet I feel completely empty. Work isn’t as fun as it used to be (I was extremely passionate about Software Engineering 2 years ago), my personal life is shit since dating in 2024 is literally impossible for an average looking person (even tho I’m tall and white!!). Stuff that used to be fun 10 years ago (e.g. movies, computer games) seems super boring. My parents are quite rich, but I feel extremely poor despite the fact my net worth is close to 400K (I’m from Europe).

How do I deal with this shit? I tried therapy but it didn’t help much besides bringing shit tones of issues from my past.

Walking away from corporate life is so hard

qscbji @ Amazon

I have achieved reasonable NW to be financially independent. However, it is so hard to walk away from corporate life. As I reflect on it, there are a multitude of reasons to feel that way:

(1) the feeling of safety and financial security with a steady income stream.
(2) some sort of societal pressure of questions like “why are you retired at an early age?” And all the negative connotations associated with it.
(3) uncertainties around the medical expenses.
(4) the idea of spending and reducing the NW seems unsettling since I have worked hard to build it up all my adult life so far.
(5) personal goals to leave a secure financial future for my kids as I came from nothing and struggles associated with it.

Early morning musings in an anonymous forum. Time to get off the bed and exercise 😀.

While my husband was in hospital, he was fired.

c7k809 @ Workday

My husband was fired 2 weeks back when he was admitted to the hospital. He has been dealing with health issues and he is on few trial medications, which are very important for his condition. Without a job, we’ll be out of status. He just got of the hospital and still recovering. We have no information on why he was fired or laid off. Any advice is appreciated on how to address this situation. Thank you.
