When people acknowledge suburbs suck

🦆🦆✨️ @ Capital One

But they live there to raise their kids, is that not acknowledging they chose to raise their kids somewhere that sucks?

So everyone in the family suffers.

GojoJJK @ Cisco

Look at their president. He has an extremely hot wife. If I were him, I would be making so many babies with her. And yet, they have 0 children despite sleeping on the same bed?

Koreans have hot girls, kpop, and sexiest girls in Asia, and yet, they're birth rate is <1.

Vietnamese are NOT Southeast Asia. We are East Asians.

nguoi_viet @ ex-Proofpoint

Vietnamese belong in the same group as Koreans, Chinese, and Japanese. And not the same group as Thais, Phillipines, Cambodia, or Taiwan.

We were influenced by Chinese culture, and as a result share a lot of characteristics with Koreans, Chinese, and Japanese. A lot of Vietnamese can be pale, just like the East Asians.

We are NOT Southeast Asian.
Vietnamese are East Asian.
——
I’ve had a lot of trauma and inferiority complex my whole life from being a supposed “Southeast Asian” Vietnamese. But I think Vietnamese have enough in common with the upper-class East Asian countries of China, Korea, and Japan to be accepted into the East Asian club. And not classified with the other Southeast Asian countries, like Taiwan or Cambodia.

I support Vietnam falling under the “East Asian” identity label.

Edit: for those of you telling me I have an “inferiority complex,” read my post again. I do not.

—-
Edit 2: This is common thinking among Vietnamese.

New Grad Starter Budget in NYC

postsynd @ Google

Hey all I’m 20 YO and will be joining Google as a swe new grad in August; enough money saved from internships to move to NYC in July. I’ve calculated tentative expenses as the following and would like to hear opinions on if I’m off the mark on anything.

Monthly salary post tax: $8,856

Rent (locked in): $3,200

Tithes (general giving according to beliefs): $885

Savings: $1,771

Student loans (15k): $1,000

Utilities (based on avg from previous owners): $207

Food: $1,000

Transportation: $200

Unallocated/pocket funds: $591

All of the above is coming from the salary, then I’m planning to use stock sales to save in 401k/roth. Parents say I don’t need to go so heavy toward student loans and I’ve also been given advice by mentor to load up my 401k early to secure match $$ and use as down payment for house.

Open to thoughts and can provide extra information as requested.

TC: will be ~237k

Trump is going to mop the floor with sleepy joe at the first debate

prestieg @ ex-SpaceX

It’s going to be elder abuse at the first debate. Whatever stimulant or amphetamine they give joe, better last for the duration of the debate. Trump is literally going to mop the floor with this non sentient, declining, fascist pedophile puppet

Please choose your partner wisely

pot.luck @ Amazon

Single earner, household with two kids. My wife stays at home even though she got an MBA here that I paid for. She doesn't drive, doesn't do household chores either except maybe cook once in a while when she feels like it. I am totally burned out managing both work and kids. The older one is in elementary while the younger one goes to daycare (wife doesn't want to keep her at home as she cannot manage). My daily routine is getting up early and getting the kids ready, dropping both off to daycare/school then battling the traffic to reach downtown Seattle from the east side; I then come home and spend time with kids and put them to bed. Then either get takeout or make food for myself. I have zero life outside of this. My wife just watches some BS daily soaps with zero empathy towards me.

I can't say anything to her because she starts shouting on top of her voice and it's not good for my kids. I feel burned out as I have no life outside work and kids. I haven't been able to workout in over a year nor pursued any of my hobbies. Please choose your partner wisely.

32 with 1.2M , when should I quit ?

looknfrjob @ Intel

I am 32 years old with 8 YOE, and a NW of 1.25M.

My current TC is 220K and my family TC is 360K. With current levels of savings, I should be able to get to 2M in the next 3 years.

However, I don't enjoy my work anymore. In fact, I hate it.

I am aware that I am not rich enough to quit and do nothing. But quitting is always in my mind. However I am not sure when I should pull the trigger.

What do you guys think ? Any feedback ?

Edit 1: Many in the comments section are asking about my savings ratio. So here is the breakdown:

Effective tax rate - 29%

Post tax income - 255K
Annual rent - 30K
Annual expenses - ~20K (no kids, paid off used car)

Therefore, savings around 200K

Exposing DEI

growler 🐻‍❄️ @ New

Without sharing too many details, I was heavily involved in some of the DEI initiatives at larger companies and was horrified by what I’ve seen behind the scenes.

Without naming any companies, I’m thinking about making a video sharing some of the stories of what I saw behind the scenes. I’ve wanted to make a YouTube channel for a long time anyway.

My brother thinks it could be career suicide for me. He thinks no one would want to hire me because I’m squealing on employers. However, I’m not naming any names.

How would you feel about a job candidate who made a video like that, even if they didn’t name any of the companies?

Stop wasting your time preparing for the interview

#sfdc_guy @ Informatica

It’s not a surprise that the market is going to get tougher and tougher and all of the industry leaders recognizing it with fear. Check the recent statement from salesforce Benoif how he sees the market will be impacted by AI and custom software development.

Now I have a offer for you , instead of wasting your time preparing with leetcode - how about launching your own business? I’m working on three right now and I’m shorthanded. The best part is not typical start up bullshit. It’s already generates cash but needs to scale.

I see that it can be scaled in 6 to 18 months with proper development and growth.

DM me if you’re interested

Do not DM me if you’re looking for a job as a safe Harbour and just want to go to massages and drink coffee and rest and West you guys better do something else

Thanks for your attention

Offer from meta.

ocidude @ Oracle

I interviewed with meta for a M1 position and got a positive rating from the hiring committee. They started the team match and gave me initial numbers around 550k tc which seems low for the bay area according to levels.fyi.

I am interviewing elsewhere as well but no offers in hand yet. What is the best way to get FB to up their offer?

Thank you in advance

AMA: SWE > MLE transition

🫡verse @ ex-Meta

I’m d1 at series C, formerly uber-TL at Meta, 14 years in the industry, transitioned from SWE to MLE in 2016, helped many others, hired both at big tech and startup

Seen many questions lately “help me transition to MLE” but no specifics. Happy to speak to any particular issues and give you my 2c.

Disclaimer: as a director I am triple booked in every time slot, I will get to all the questions but it may take a bit of time. Thanks for understanding

28F - Path to 1M net worth

djdieike @ Amazon

I don’t have anyone to share this moment with except for my boyfriend. Yesterday I hit 1M net worth, all liquid, after just under 6 years working in tech. I left college with 15k and saved pretty aggressively as soon as I started my first job. Prioritized tax advantage accounts (back door Roth, megabackdoor Roth, traditional 401k, hsa). But also focused on enjoying my life in the moment; spending quality time with loved ones, taking many vacations, deep conversations.

I have been feeling the happiest I have in my entire life in the 2 years building up to this moment. I grew up with depression, money was held over my head and my only dream was to escape. I never had any dreams other than to get out. Over the years my fear turned into a fear of losing my job and returning to a situation like that. Then that fear melted away.

These fears were all despite being with a boyfriend who is nothing but supportive and loving. Who supports me through extreme personal loss. Gradually this fear melted away. Now I am beginning to have dreams for the first time in my life. Feeling such a deep euphoric feeling when I experience the beauty of nature and feel the love from those around me. I’ve never found myself crying from joy like this before.

These feelings of happiness bring me so much more meaning and true happiness than money could ever. But for me, achieving this financial goal was a key part of my journey. It helped me feel safe enough, for the first time in my life, so I could let go and experience the feelings of happiness.
