How do people survive in big tech for 10+ years?
Ex-MSFTβ€ @ New
Hello, I recently left Microsoft after less than 1.5 years. I was hoping to stay at Microsoft for at least 4-5 years, and possibly even longer if I could, but alas I was pushed out way before then. I've had a few positions before Microsoft at startup companies, all of which lasted less time than I spent at Microsoft. I know it's normal for employees to leave a startup at around 1 year, but I thought Microsoft would be different.
I'm wondering how is it possible that people can last at Microsoft or other big tech companies for 10, 20, even 30+ years? I had no desire to leave Microsoft but I was pushed out due to my manager threatening to lay me off because I worked remotely. I feel like every company is always trying to push me out at around 1 year, despite always being told I'm a "top performer". Even if those people just do what their manager says unwillingly, they always end up being promoted and enjoy their job, so I doubt they did anything against their own will or were being pushed out at any point.

Amazon RTO has become a joke!
adru1625 @ Amazon
L6 HWE, Sunnyvale office, TC 290k
First week of RTO (in May), most of my team showed up around 9 ish and stayed until 5ish.
As weeks went by, people (not just my team) have started literally βstopping byβ the office whenever they feel like.
Many of my team members, including myself show up around 10-10:30, go for lunch around 11:30, we play basketball/use gym from 1 to 2 and head home latest by 3pm.
Whatβs the point of RTO?
All we do is socialize, gossip, go for lunch, play and go for long walks/gym.

I plan to split even lump sum on VTI, VOO, VGT. Any advice to do better?
Edit: I was dumb to sit on this cash since the news of layoffs last year. I was scared.

Is Canada the worst country for tech on earth?
lbyh57 @ Amazon
They pay low TC, which is bad, but they are also extremely uncultured and have some of the worst weather on earth. Europe also pays low TC but at least you can enjoy the culture and go around exploring Europe. European weather is also much better. The same can be said about some Asian cities like Singapore. Canada? A wasteland. Why does anyone ever move there?

Son was rejected by every college
Talllar @ Google
Our son was rejected by every college he applied to. He landed a full-time government job that pays $27/hr which he started in May right after graduating high school and has moved to another state for his job. He has pretty decent stats and is a happy kid in general. Any idea what went wrong? Any tips for applying again next year?
Academics:
GPA: 3.57/4.00
SAT: 1470
ACT: 32
Applying to engineering or CS programs
Dual enrollment:
- Associate degree from community college at the same time he graduated high school
- 92/100 community college GPA
Extracurriculars:
- Fashion club - not much time dedication, mostly full of rich kids showing off their $800 suits or Doc Martens
- Traveled around Canada alone one summer
- Volunteered for 1 hour for a local political campaign
- INFORMS Student Union
- Learn-to-code program for high schoolers with stipend
- Alumni club for above learn-to-code program
- Paid vehicle engineering internship
- Swisscom Zurich DevOps internship for 11 weeks

Yβall over there are incompetent morons who see phone data mining as the only way to make money, and do not give a single shit about actual user experience. Or have the brains to concoct even a single proper revenue stream, which, mind you, even some randos building 3rd party apps apparently do.
I mean, WTF is this shit? Who tf are you to keep demanding people install your lazy piece of shit app to access your site? Fuck you.

Addicted to cocaine
Misc... @ New
I have become addicted to cocaine and now I am using it from the second I wake up till a few hours before I switch to weed and try to get tired enough to sleep. Using ~1g/day. The cost is ~$650/week.
Aside from the negative impact it is having on my health (nose inflamed pretty much constantly) and on my finances it hasn't negatively impacted my life. Just as productive on my job as ever, relationship with my wife is good, etc.
I want to want to quit... But at this stage I am not even resisting the urge to use.
Mostly venting as I'm sure none of you perfect tech millionaires can relate or advise.
Edit: 200k TC

1m Net worth under 30 π
hamper @ Microsoft
Today I eclipsed 1 million for the first time. Posting on Blind because I donβt want share with friends/family. No special words or feelings today. Iβll save that for all the legit 5m posts.
NW Breakdown
425k investment
375k retirement
520k home
20k cash
-340k loan
Tracking NW by age I hit the goal before 29.
Age NW (change in year)
29 1m
28 850 +50 (goal: +200)
27 800 (+250)
26 550 (+250)
25 300 (+100)
24 200 (+100)
23 100 (+85)
22 15
18 6
Personal facts:
B.S. in CS @ public school ~3.0 GPA
Home owner for 3 years (2.75 % interest, ~500k)
Car paid off for 7+ years (thanks to parents)
The biggest contributing factors for me excluding macro econ:
1) family that paid for my education
2) consistent learning. I was a scrub who was not at all interested in tech until I was 22/23. 3x increase in salary since first job (85k)
3) a foolish, once in a lifetime, investment strategy - margin 150k and earn 85k during 2020
TC - 230k
YOE - 7
