PhD Dissertation Public Defense Held at BiT–BDU
[December 24, 2025 | Bahir Dar, ISC/BiT]
Mr. Biruk Abate Fenta successfully defended his PhD dissertation at the Faculty of Chemical and Food Engineering, Bahir Dar Institute of Technology, Bahir Dar University (BiT–BDU). His dissertation, titled “Development of Efficient Micro-Capillary Absorptive Evaporative Cooler for Storage of Fresh Produces Using Indigenous Materials by Experimental Methods,” was conducted under the supervision of Prof. Mulugeta Adimasu (Main Supervisor) and Dr. Bimrew Tamirat (Co-Supervisor).
Mr. Biruk Abate’s research focuses on the design and experimental development of an innovative, low-cost evaporative cooling system using locally available (indigenous) materials. The study aims to improve post-harvest storage conditions for fresh agricultural products, particularly in regions with limited access to conventional refrigeration technologies. By enhancing cooling efficiency through micro-capillary absorptive mechanisms, the research contributes to reducing post-harvest losses, improving food preservation, and supporting sustainable agricultural practices.
During the session, examiners and members of the academic community raised critical questions and provided constructive feedback. Mr. Biruk addressed these comments with clear, well-structured, and scientifically sound responses, demonstrating strong mastery of both the theoretical foundations and experimental methodologies of his research.
Bahir Dar Institute of Technology – Bahir Dar University extends its heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Biruk Abate on his successful PhD dissertation defense and outstanding academic achievement.
