This week we’re recognizing the “Father of Railways,” George Stephenson. Stephenson created the “Stephenson gauge” which is a rail gauge of 1,435 mm (4 feet 8.5 inches) that is the standard gauge by name and convention for most of the world’s railways today. George Stephenson and his sons company, Robert Stephenson and Company built the Locomotion No. 1 which is the first steam locomotive to carry passengers on a public rail line, the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1825.
