A question for the BIM World... What is a BIM Manager or BIM Coordinator? There is no such role within PAS1192 yet it continues to surface. Design clash detection is different from construction clash detection. Architects and engineers do design intent models, that may or may not include what is actually done by the contractor. Design documents tell someone who knows how to build what is required, they are not full instructions on how to achieve the requirements. Also there are many reasons thing change between design and construction. Therefore when an architect says their documents are "100 % clash free" they are only refer to the design, the bit they are responsible for and knowledgeable about

Good question Gavin. How blurred are the lines between BIM, Digital Information, Smart Infrastructure and Digital Sciences! No sooner as we try to educate staff in BIM, they have to learn other languages and terminology. In a time where we are trying to get project teams away from resisting change, this has the danger of increasing the problem. I am all for change, but none of this is going to happen, especially if we don't give one component time to mature.

My take on the DE / BIM debate is that I see BIM as a subset of Digital Engineering that caters for the information management at the FM stage. All of the digital engineering analysis activities, as opposed to the manual tasks, that went into the design and construction phases can be categorised as Digital Engineering which then leaves BIM in its own element.
