Премьера балета «Легенда о любви» состоялась на сцене Большого театра 15 апреля 1965 года. "Легенда" стала первой работой Юрия Григоровича в качестве главного балетмейстера Большого. В премьерном спектакле партию Мехмене Бану исполнила Майя Плисецкая, партию Ферхада - Марис Лиепа, а партию Ширин - Наталия Бессмертнова.

In the premiere performance, the part of Mekhmene Banu was performed by Maya Plisetskaya, the part of Ferkhad by Maris Liepa, and the part of Shirin by Natalia Bessmertnova.
