Dr. Abeba Birhane, from Mozilla foundation and University College Dublin Ireland, alumnus of Bahir Dar University gave a public lecture at BiT-BDU.

Dr. Abeba Birhane, Cognitive Scientist at Mozilla Trustworthy AI, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Researcher at University College Dublin Ireland, and alumna of Bahir Dar University, delivered a public lecture to BDU academic staff and students. She spoke on the growth of cognitive science, and how the old method of conducting research has been superseded by impeded cognitive science. It takes into consideration the environmental component, where research is conducted while individuals are engaged in their normal surroundings. According to her, only a few people, particularly Ethiopians, are focused on such progress. AI has a variety of applications, including NLP, which covers language conversion and grammatical checking. Meanwhile, robotics is the other use, and most studies involve robotics application in aiding and reducing human workload.

There is also a sector for computer vision, which began in 1955, although face recognition and a variety of other outputs serve at various levels. However, models have been recoded with bias in terms of gender, color, and race, which is why she is focusing on dataset auditing. According to her speech, dataset auditing is a procedure in which models are checked before implementation, and most have been associated with harming individuals, including putting people to prison and incorrect health prediction. However, applications based on planets and meteorology are expected to have a positive influence. Discussions with the audience and participants had followed the lecture.

Bahir Dar University Alumna’s account of her former BiT
The current software engineer of the big Microsoft Company, Eden Melaku was a student at Bahir Dar University in 2013. Among female graduates, she was awarded a gold medal with 3.97 average high score and a gold medal with a high score from the computer faculty and a certificate of recognition for doing the best graduation project of the year by the faculty. Her stay at Bahir Dar University testified that she has contributed to her identity today. In addition, she helped the institution she studied and the students in different ways. She's all in the way.

"My name is Eden Melaku Mulugeta. I graduated from the software engineering department in february 2021. I am a software engineer at Microsoft.
I joined BDU in 2015 as a freshman student in Yibab campus, after a year, the Computing faculty moved some students to peda and I was part of that. I completed my second year study in peda campus and moved to poly campus for my 3rd and remaining years of study. I had adventures and memorable times at Bahir Dar University.
During my 5 year study in BIT I had the privilege to learn the basics of programming and software engineering from amazing teachers who went above and beyond to help me build a foundation that I can thrive on. My department has an excellent curriculum designed to prepare us with skill and mindset for the corporate and entrepreneurial world. I thank all my teachers for helping me achieve my goal. I would like to give special gratitude to teachers who made me fall in love with software engineering. My first year object oriented design teacher Mr. Asegahegn, my object oriented programming and advanced programming teacher Mr. Desta Berihu.
I got the opportunity to stay the summer and work on a project under the help of an advisor after completing my second year that gave me extra time to work on real world problems outside of regular classes. I would like to thank the computing faculty and Dr. Gebeyehu for organizing this.
I would like to thank the ICT4D research center for helping me during my final year project with materials, office space and technical advice. BIT has an excellent staff from teachers to administration, I am so happy to study in an institute determined to create high-skilled, valuable engineers.
I would like to help BIT with mentoring graduating students to prepare them for technical interviews, which can help them get a job in big tech companies; I can give technical training and workshops. I will also participate in the poly alumni network on a variety of projects it is working on.
